It is also the key to Pann's approach in composing for multiple wind soloists and ensemble. With Bach's Brandenburgs in the rear-view mirror, Pann has created a glorious hybrid of inspirations with intricate counterpoint, cadenzas, beautiful slow textures, and wild rides, creating a 16-minute, fast-slow-fast concerto grosso. With this new suite for concert band Franco Cesarini draws on the rich repertoire of folk songs from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northern Italy. Between the 16th and 17th Century this rural region developed the 'furlana', a brilliant dance in 6/8 time. This catchy dance soon spread throughout Europe and became more cultivated. Franois Couperin (1668-1733), Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) all composer of the 18th century composed 'furlane' and in the 20th Century Maurice Ravel used a 'furlana' dance his Tombeau de Couperin. Franco Cesarini follows this great tradition by using the 'furlana' as the basis for this major new concertwork.

Written for four vocal soloists it was originally scored for a relatively large orchestra (including flutes (recorders), oboes and horns) and mixed choir. Although secular in character, the words describe how well a faithful shepherd keeps watch over his flock and hence has obvious allusions to the teachings of the Christian church. While the lyrics are perhaps alittle obsequious, much of the music for this cantata is celebratoryand lushly scored for a large orchestra including trumpets, oboesd'amore and flutes, making it an ideal piece for a concert bandarrangement.

In Pavane, the base line, which runs throughout the entire piece, forms the leitmotiv. This special work unfurls slowly and is based on chords that are reminiscent of Bach or Scarlatti. Towards the middle, it builds up a climax that disappears in exactly the same manner as it began.
