    Flamingo Rock - Kevin Houben

Tonight the sea will be awash with pink! Flamingos from everywhere are flying in for a rockin' party. Their long legs prance around to the beat, circling each other, as their beaks chatter all night long. Who else wants to go to the FlamingoRock? Kevin Houben's new composition is full of little rhythmic and harmonic challenges perfect for bands both young and old. But beware, once you start playing the tune, you just might not be able to stop!

The Phantom of Dark Hollow - Robert Sheldon

The Phantom of Dark Hollow was commissioned by the Indiana Bandmasters Association for the 2005 Indiana All-District Honor Bands. The piece was inspired by the weird and gruesome legend told about Robeson's Hills, just across the Wabash River from Vincennes, Indiana. In the midst of these hills is a deep, dark ravine, where the rays of the sun never penetrate. This place is known as Dark Hollow. (3:10)

    Monsters, Unite! - Kelly Dugger

Monsters, Unite! by Kelly Dugger is a fun beginning band piece that is sure to be a hit, not only at Halloween time but all year round. Monsters all around the world are waking up to a calling to unite. Some are big, hairy creatures, and others are delicate and fairy-like. They walk and fly long distances to find each other. In the end, they all come together, marching as one. Just when you think they've marched off into the distance, they come together to surprise the audience. Unique percussion effects---timpani glissando and theremin (or flexatone)---add to the spooky sound. A tuba solo at the end is followed by a surprising scream that will leave the performers and the audience giggling!

    Abington Ridge - Ed Huckeby

Ed Huckeby's Build-A-Band version of his Abington Ridge is a spirited contest piece that has just the right combination of changing meters and syncopation to make it a must for your next festival or concert. This version makes this wonderful composition playable by very small bands and it will sound great as long has you have the four parts covered. Optional percussion and keyboard parts can add to the overall effect. Highly recommended.

    Yellowstone Choral - Filip Ceunen

Yellowstone Choral was inspired by the marvellous landscapes of the Yellowstone National Park in the United States. The choral comprises three choral phrases that alternate throughout the work. The beginning is lightly orchestrated, with an oboe solo, but more instruments gradually join in before the second phrase of the choral is introduced. The third phrase does not appear so quickly and when it does it is introduced by horns and trombones before building up to the climax of the choral, where the trumpet takes the upper hand. After this the choral gradually fades away, with the first and second phrases appearing just a few more times. The choral ends as it began, with a slowly ebbing orchestration.

    Viva Massima - Eiji Suzuki

I wrote this in "Mashima-mode" dedicated to and celebrating the eminent Japanese composer Toshio Mashima's 60th birthday. The piece incorporates various familiar styles, melodies and nuances of the Popstage series. It is ideal as a closing piece or encore to finish a concert brilliantly! Effective use of Latin percussion is essential for good momentum. Don't be afraid to play bright and full. Massima is Italian for "peak" or "maximum", no special meaning, just word-play on the name Mashima. (Eiji Suzuki)

Scale Studies for Band - James Curnow

An important part of our Essentials of Musicianship Series, Scale Studies for Band is designed to be used as an instructional aid during your normal daily practice. Written so that the scale studies can be interlaced at appropriate times into your rehearsal, they enable you to address the scale and key considerations of your next piece just before starting that piece. For instance, if the next arrangement you will rehearse has a section in the key of G Major, you can take a moment and review the study in that key (Study Number 7). It's amazing how many wrong notes can be avoided by reviewing the key signature in an interesting and exciting manner, before diving into theperformance piece rehearsal. In the long run, this "key signature review" approach can actually save more rehearsal time than it uses. In addition to the full band aspect of Scale Studies, you may find value in quickly and easily administered "playing tests" using these materials. However you choose to use them, the Scale Studies from the Curnow Music Press Essentials of Musicianship Series will be valuable indeed!
