A Maritime Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
A Maritime Overture seeks to portray various aspects of the sea, from the gentle lapping of the waves at the start to the storms and battles later on. Beautiful English horn (cued otherwise) solo opportunity, and outstanding display for percussionists. A likely candidate for festival and contest music.

A Spa Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The Spa of the title relates to Cheltenham, England and seeks to evoke both its peaceful and bustling character, creating a montage of streets, parks and overall atmosphere, with a central section suggesting the Antarctic explorer, Edward Wilson, a fellow Cheltonian whose statue looks out upon the town's major boulevard, the Promenade.

Another Night Before Christmas (Narrator & Keyboard with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The parody on the original poem is by England's Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, a Scottish poet and playwright. She is Professor of Contemporary Poetry at the Manchester Metropolitan University and is the first laureate to be chosen in the 21st century. The story is about a little girl who wants to see Santa Claus to prove to herself that he is real, but falls asleep at a critical moment.

Bethlehem Down (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Warlock, Peter - Lane & Noble
There are few instrumental pieces amongst the works of Peter Warlock who wrote chiefly vocal items. Several of his carols have become firmly established in the seasonal repertoire of singers and choirs; none moreso than Bethlehem Down. The string version by Philip Lane stretches the original four verses to five and seeks to make the piece as effective for strings as it is for choirs. No harmonic changes have been made although the voicing has naturally been varied for textural reasons. This adaptation by Paul Noble has added to the variance in instrumental textures to fully realize the tonal colours of the Concert Band. With key signatures of F/d minor, Bb/g minor, Eb/c minor, and Ab/f minor, numerous suspensions, and softer to louder dynamics, this chorale is a perfect warm-up and tune-up piece for the ensemble, while at the same time exploring worthwhile and programmable concert repertoire.

Brighton Camp, Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The Suite of Cotswold Folkdances (not to be confused with Cotswold Dances) was commissioned by the Stroud Festival to celebrate HRH, the Princess Anne and her family taking up residence in the Cotswolds, near Stroud. The suite of dances is based on traditional Morris tunes prevalent in the Cotswolds at the turn of the century. Although the tunes themselves are left largely untouched, their implied harmonies and moods are treated more freely to create a balanced work for the concert hall. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 may recall more familiar variants since it is in the nature of folksong/dance for there to be more than one version when examples were transmitted, not always accurately, by word of mouth or note of pipe.

Words have been added for a choral version. Starlight Lullaby was first performed in 1990, while Christmas Eve Waltz dates from 1989. Three Christmas Pictures may be performed as a suite, in any order, or as individual pieces.

Cotswold Dances 1. Seven Springs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)
