Wings - Vince Gassi
The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his , it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Sails - Vince Gassi
You'll feel the wind at your back as this bright march weighs anchor with a bold opening and sets sail with flutes and oboes stating the main theme. Sails unfurl and the rest of the fleet (ensemble) joins in. Counter-lines and flourishes are added. Eventually the seas calm during a passage through a slower lyrical section where the opening thematic material is developed. But wait, there is land in sight! A new key is stated, and all return safely to port.

London Bridge
London Bridge was originally written for brass quintet and later scored for concert band. Below is the composer recalling the quintet version's premiere. London Bridge was designed to appeal to children, but also to the child remaining in the rest of us. It kind of developed asit went along and ended up where it is today if that makes any sense at all. A few days after the first draft was finished I took it to a clinic for high school band members at one of theAnchorage schools. The clinic was put on by the Canadian Brass who were in Anchorage on a concert tour. They sight read it at the clinic. I even asked them to autograph the parts. They did. I did not have the nerve to ask them what they thought about it, and they offered meno opinion. That may have been good. This is a terrific novelty piece that shows off the whole band, quotes famous pieces and allows the students to really have fun.

Three Spanish Songs (for Soprano and Wind Ensemble) - Matthew Tommasini
This cycle is a setting of three contrasting poems by Latin-American poets Leopoldo Lugones, Ruben Dario and Jose Marti. "Olas Grises" uses evocative rain and sea imagery to meditate on the nature of life and death. Set as a lyrical, quasi-strophic song, these images are portrayed through the opening percussion raindrop motive and the moaning vocal line used throughout the movement. "Nocturno" is a frantic soliloquy set as an extended opera scene. The piano and percussion accompany the soprano in the opening recitative which is followed by a surreal aria accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a re-statement of both sections. "Suen~o Despierto" is a short poem about the contrasting images of a waking dream. Based on a fragment of the lullaby "Nanita Nana," heard in its entirety at the opening, the song is a set of three variations, followed by a coda, which portray these various images. Three Spanish Songs was commissioned by Michael Haithcock and the University of Michigan Symphony Band. The recital/rehearsal version of this piece is item number 29638PV ($35).
