The Four Noble Truths (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The Four Noble Truths are the most basic expression of the teaching of Buddha and therefore still form the guidelines for Buddhists to this day. The four truths are Dukkha, which describes times of major stress in our lives - birth, ageing, desire and death; Samudaya which describes those parts of our life that induce stress, feeling, craving, desire; Nirodha which tells us how to eliminate those aspects of our lives which induce stress and Magga which describes the eight disciplines which can help us eliminate the origins of stress from our lives. It can be seen from these over-simplified definitions, that the Four Noble Truths fall into two pairs, the first two describing the origins of stress and the second two describing how we can reduce stress. To reflect this, the four movements of this work are also combined into two pairs - two quick movements and two slow movements. A fascinating work from this great English composer.Duration: 14:00

The Four Winds - Evan Hause
The Four Winds by Evan Hause for Concert Band. The Four Winds is an homage by the composer to some of the well-known band composers, such as Clifton Williams and John Barnes Chance, as well as earlier wind masters like Holst and Mahler. Evan Hause was a student of William Bolcom, and his more advanced band work, Tango Variations, has been performed and recorded by some of the top university ensembles. This fantasy-overture is appropriate for the intermediate high school band, contrasting brisk fanfare music with variations on a Romantic theme. (Grade 4) Dur: 6:00.

Largo (from Winter, The Four Seasons) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vivaldi, Antonio - Sparke, Philip
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands, with Handel and J.S. Bach, as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular, he was without serious competition, the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works, including forty-nine operas, he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement, Largo, portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This arrangement for concert band retains all the warmth of the original.Duration: 3:45

Autumn (from the Four Seasons) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vivaldi, Antonio - Wagner, Douglas E.
One of the best-known themes from the third movement of Antonio Vivaldi's innovative Four Seasons (Opus 8) suite, L'autunno (Autumn) is a natural choice for young players. Though the arrangement has been scored with the limited range and instrumentation of the beginning level in mind, the composer's festive mood and intent remains undiminished.Duration: 2.00

Four Earth Songs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Putz, Marco
The hymn Nun ruhen alle Wlder (Now All Forests Rest), arranged by J.S. Bach (No. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, from Cantata BWV 13), is a guiding light throughout this four-movement composition. Pu?tz wrote this work as a musical outcry against the wilful, profit-driven destruction of our environment. When Bach used the word "ruhen" (to rest) over 350 years ago, it probably had a different nuance from the meaning it has today. At the beginning of the 21st century - the so-called age of progress - "nun ruhen alle Wlder" should mean "now all forests die" . Massive industrialization and globalization, coupled with pure greed, corruption, political scandals, an ever-widening gap between the rich and poor, and other such senseless human actions, are pushing our blue planet closer and closer to the point of no return. This work is not intended to be a ranting accusation. It should remind us of the beauty and harmony that can exist all around us in nature, if we take care of it. Pu?tz hopes that this will, one day, help put a greater emphasis on humanity's survival, and coexistence with nature rather than the exploitation described earlier. All four texts were created by Australian poet Graeme King, whose works were discovered by Pu?tz, by chance on the internet. Pu?tz was especially captivated by King's clarity, and intrigued by the possibilities of adapting and melding the strong rhythmical structure of King's writing with his own musical language. The four movements are as follows: 1. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow The world premire of Four Earth Songs took place on 7 July 2009 at the 14th WASBE-Conference in Cincinnati (USA). This work is dedicated in friendship to Jouke Hoekstra, conductor, and the Frysk Fanfare Orkest (the Frisian Fanfare-Orchestra).Duration: 27:30

Four Original Warm-Ups for Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert
From his experience as a conductor and adjudicator, Bert Appermont knows that bands often experience the same problems: lack of sound control, intonation difficulties, uncontrolled articulation and insufficient phrasing. Practising these aspects is very demanding and there is little material available that is also enjoyable to play. Four Original Warm-Ups consists of four fun warm-up pieces. Each piece focuses on one of the problems without the music being dull. The four pieces work equally well when played together or as individual items either at rehearsals or in a concert. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition.
