Largo from Symphony "From the New World" - Antonín Dvorák / arr. David Marlatt
The principal lyrical theme from Dvork' s second movement is equal in fame and popularity to Pachelbel's Canon and Albinoni's Adagio. This incredibly simple and beautiful theme has been arranged here for a soloist (Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet or Baritone) and band. This is a great piece to showcase the talents of a member in the ensemble.

Odyssey - David Marlatt
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem and tells of the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus on his long journey after the fall of Troy. This feeling of adventure and mystery has been captured in this original work set in three movements. This piece was written in 2007 but now features some advanced parts for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet. These parts add range, technique, and control that is at the grade 3 level. This offers the opportunity for more advanced players to play these parts with more flourishes while the majority of the band can play at a grade 1.5 level.

Sunset Over Blue Water - David Marlatt
is a fresh new scoring of the famous hymn tune "It Is Well with My Soul." The simple melody combined with the powerful, heart-wrenching lyrics, have made this hymn popular around the world. The lyrics are about remaining positive even when faced with great personal loss and sadness. This version is positive throughout and was inspired by a picture taken aboard a cruise ship of a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This work features some solo opportunities in flute, clarinet, horn, alto saxophone, and trumpet. It builds to a strong forte verse before fading away to a quiet peaceful resolution.

Swiftriver Passage - Paul Suchan
is a work with contrasting sections. Slow, flowing, lyrical sections are contrasted by fast shifting 6/8 and 3/4 giving a wonderful variety in sonority and feel. There are nice ensemble moments and also the opportunity to feature a few soloists as well: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and snare drum. This is an excellent piece for showing off an ensemble.

Legacy - Ryan Meeboer
is a song of heroic nature and is a great way to introduce polyrhythmic texture to a young band. This piece opens with a high energy feel that can represent a hero. The piece moves into a lyrical section that can be portrayed as the hero's downfall. A new melody is introduced by the alto saxophone solo, which is later countered by the flute and trumpets. The high energy melody returns again, bringing the piece to an exciting conclusion.

Couchiching Suite - John Herberman
was written as a commission from the National Music Camp of Canada, which runs each year on the shores of beautiful Lake Couchiching, north of Toronto, Canada. The goal in composing this piece was to give the top students at the camp a challenging and original piece to play. The first movement is a march in 5/4 that derives its pulse from the melodic shapes, rather than set groupings of beats. The middle movement is a slow homophonic song with rich harmonies and thick chordal textures requiring good listening and tuning skills. The third movement is a burner in mixed meters featuring solo alto saxophone and a soaring soli for the French horns. This is a great concert suite to showcase the achievements and abilities of a senior ensemble.
