New York- or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come! This piece forms the final movement of 'East Coast Pictures', commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. It is a suite of three short 'pictures' that were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.

Jump Swing Fever
Only cave dwellers have missed the dance frenzy that has taken over the entertainment scene, bringing the classic swing dancing of the '40's right back into American school dances. Groups like Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Brian Setzer, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are just a few of the bands that are pumpin' while the room is jumpin'. John Wasson has combined three of our favorite tunes into a rug cutting medley, including Jump, Jive An' Wail, Zoot Suit Riot, and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing).

Vulcan - Michael Daugherty
(2014) Vulcan for Concert Band is Grammy award winning composer Michael Daugherty's first work for the high school and intermediate level college band. The work is a colorful homage to Gene Roddenberry's interstellar universe as depicted in the classic American television series Star Trek (1966-69). The title refers to the fiery planet Vulcan, home world of half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock. As the rational-minded science officer aboard the starship Enterprise (commanded by the hot-blooded Captain James T. Kirk), Mr. Spock grapples with the fascinating predicament of making decisions predicated on human emotion versus Vulcan logic. Daugherty has composed stirring, yet highly structured music that alludes to the Vulcan Pon Farr ritual, Vulcan telepathic mind-melds, and the volcanic planet itself. At the the Ann Arbor, Michigan world premiere (utilizing the combined forces of the Pioneer, Huron and Skyline High School bands), Vulcan was an immediate hit and will surely become one of Daugherty's most performed works. Second Essay - Samuel Barber
Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organised musical modules. The opening theme has adefinite American flavour, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round offthe work. Expertly transcribed for symphonic band by Dr. George Schneider, this is certain to find its place in the standard repertoire for mature ensembles. Duration 11:00. (Grade 5)

Think - Aretha Franklin
THINK: is the biggest hit for American singer and songwriter Aretha Franklin. Most of us associate the song with the 1980 blockbuster "The Blues Brothers", but the song became a hit as early as 1968 when Franklin recorded it for the first time. This arrangement is based on the Blues Brothers version. This is an arrangement in the Challenge series - the series with challenging lead parts.

Italian impressions - Angelo Sormani
"Italy is truly a magical land that has touched my heart beyond measure." These are the words describing the feelings that accompanied the various visits of the American conductor Wesley Broadnax in our country. Italian Impressions, a composition dedicated to Broadnax, portrays these feelings in three main sections that develop without interruption throughout the piece. The first section, "Magic Land," describes a trip to Rome and is a tribute to the splendor and magic of some of the venues in this city. Rich in historical and cultural significance, these places are moving because of their surprising architecture and artistic genius. The second part, "The Huge Castle," depicts his visit in the Umbrian Region. It is a reflective and suspended immersion in music that describes landscapes characterized by ancient houses, churches, courtyards, and squares. "Assisi," says Wesley, "is the city that glitters in the night sky, comparable to a huge castle!" The third part, "Medieval Ballad," is a reference to the city of Siena and Tuscany more generally. The main theme of this movement recalls medieval atmospheres and is based on the fourteenth-century ballad "Ecco la primavera" by Francesco Landino. The original material is presented, elaborated, and juxtaposed with new thematic motives, which lead to an energetic conclusion of the piece.
