Among the Clouds - Brian Balmages

Flying is a favorite activity of lucid dreamers, who are able to become aware that they are dreaming and then control their actions while inside the dream. Among the Clouds takes us into the minds of these dreamers as they drift off to sleep and wake up in a world where they own the skies. After a slow, enchanting opening conveys the sense of drifting off to sleep, the aggressive theme of the fast section begins the amazing flight. This theme develops in several ways before coming to an invigorating conclusion. Highly accessible and exciting for medium level bands!

Gentle Clouds Roll By - Donald Coakley

This lovely Chippewa lullaby was first collected on the western shores of the Great Lakes at the beginning of the twentieth century. The original "Way Way" text was obviously intended to gently lull a baby to sleep. Performing this work presents two opportunities. First, it presents the opportunity to perform with the school choir (or members of the band to sing the choral parts). Second, it also presents the option to work with the history department in the school when they are teaching about native peoples. Cross curriculum work is always popular and is of great benefit to students.

Evergreen Escapades - Adrian B. Sims

Explore the terrain and weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest, beginning with a cold, fog-covered morning, concealing the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. As the sun continues to rise, the fog fades and a gloomy rainstorm takes its place while we traverse through the evergreens. As the music persists onwards, rays of sunshine break through the clouds and bring about a warm, joyous afternoon filled with light, breathtaking mountain views, and the scent of pine needles.

    Volatus - Brian Beck

From the Latin word for flight, "Volatus" captures the art of soaring above the clouds. The higher one climbs, the more there is to see. Lift-off begins with stately brass motives and sparkling percussion, then it is up, up, and away with woodwind flourishes. With angular harmonies, driving rhythms in mixed meters, and static percussive effects, this piece has something for everyone to enjoy. (2:40)

    Sunburst - Erik Morales

Depicting the awe-inspiring moments after a thunderstorm, this concert overture is an exciting and dramatic work that portrays streaks of sunlight jetting toward the horizon. A lyrical opening sets the tone as the clouds begin to break, and then the music takes off in a frenzy of excitement as the sunlight breaks through. Incredible harmonies intertwine with dynamic fanfares and woodwind flourishes as the work continues to develop. A lyrical section provides a brief respite to the active rhythmic pulse before the music takes off again, building to one last heroic statement of the main theme. Inspirational!
