Bright Dawn Overture, Op. 59 - Franco Cesarini

Bright Dawn Overture was commissioned to Franco Cesarini by the Swiss Band Association as part of a project for the renewal and expansion of the artistic repertoire. "There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope.". This sentence by the English philosopher Bernard Williams inspired Franco Cesarini in composing this overture. In fact, even the darkest night is always followed by the sunrise and metaphorically, in every moment of difficulty, man clings to the hope of a better future. Bright Dawn Overture is written in the classic form of an Italian overture (fast-slow-fast). It is intended as a hymn of hope of recovery after a period of great difficulty. A single theme characterizes the composition, passing through the various registers and presents itself in new forms, while constantly being transformed. In the central part the theme takes on an almost mystical character, while in the finale it presents itself in a heroic guise and the composition concludes with a gesture of decisive optimism.A piece accessible to most concert bands, perfect as an opening work!

    Beyond!

Beyond was written to celebrate America's exploration of space, culminating with the historic moon landing of Apollo 11 in July, 1969. The music moves through the exciting events: a sunrise awakening, the victorious emotion of the successful landing, the spreading news, trepidation at the challenges returning to earth, and the ultimate relief and joy at the safe splashdown of the NASA astronauts. Intended to ignite the imagination, this piece encourages players to tell a story with their instrument and wonder what else may lie ahead in the future, Beyond?

Themes from - Ferde Grofé / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

It is safe to say that Grof's iconic work from the early 1930s remains his most recognized and programmed creation to this day. A master of instrumental color and texture, themes from four of the five program-based movements are included in this arrangement for younger players, including "Sunrise," "On the Trail," "Sunset," and "Cloudburst." Audiences are nonetheless assured to experience the freshness, the richness, and the excitement of the original score. (4:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

    Helios Rising - Todd Stalter

In Greek mythology, Helios is a Titan who faithfully drove the Sun's chariot across the sky each day, disappearing in the west into Oceanus (the ocean, which the Greeks believed encircled the Earth), and rising out of it again in the east the next morning. Helios' journey at sunrise is referenced musically by the ascending leap in the main theme and the strong driving rhythms of the low winds and percussion. The contrasting light and dark textures in the slow section depict twilight inevitably giving way to the darkness of night. (2:45)

Eternal Peaks - Robert W. Smith

A stunning contest or concert work for your young band. This energy-packed original is sure to make your young band sound spectacular. Inspired by Colorado, the land of mountains, in this single flowing composition the intent listener will hear the panoramic beauty of the Colorado sunrise with the Rocky Mountains as the backdrop. The power of the dinosaurs, the menacing sheer angles of jagged rocks and the thunder of ancient drums combine to form the first movement entitled In Stone and Shadow. In contrast, Twilight seeks to capture the majestic yet delicate scenery at perhaps the most beautiful time of the day. The final movement entitled "Avalanche" brings together musical and visual imagery to the most powerful of conclusions. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Carnival (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

This work was commissioned by Marktmusik Timelkam to celebrate its 170th anniversary. It describes the cultural life and hustle and bustle of the band's home base, the Austrian town of Timelkam. Carnival pictures a festive procession starting at the marketplace and lasting well into the night. The work features many carnivalesque elements and is a joy for players to perform. There is a lot of merry activity going on in the music; people cheerily chatting in the inn; singing and dancing together and having fun. There is also room for a melancholy mood, accompanied by reminiscences about eternal goodbyes and searching for love. With the added musical representation of children's playing and pranks, a beautiful sunrise as well as a depiction of the churches and societies in town, this composition is not just an account of a carnival parade but a small portrayal of life.Duration: 11.30

Mont Blanc (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

With its height of 4,808 meters, Mont-Blanc is called the roof of Europe. The highest mountains on our planet have been insurmountable for a long time. Only in the past 250 years have those giants been mounted. Crystal-hunter Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, a doctor, were the first to climb Mont-Blanc, in 1786. Many paths lead to Mont-Blanc's peak: the regular ascent goes through the magnificent voie royale of Saint-Gervais-les- Bains, which was opened in August 1855 by the Englishmen Hudson, Kennedy, and Smythe. Today's most common route to climb up, starting from Saint-Gervais via Aiguille du Gouter (3,863m), Dome du Gouter (4,304m), and Arete des Bosses (4,547m), was first used in 1861. Otto M. Schwarz composed this work inspired by the roof of Europe with its luminous and huge glaciers. Early in the morning, mountain-climbers set off to the peak; they witness the sunrise, and experience the hazards that the journey up to the summit brings along. A snowstorm and falling rocks at Arete des Bosses aggravate their journey. A sudden change of weather, however, enables them to reach the top after a strenuous ascent. This piece invites you to an imaginary journey from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains via the voie royale to the top of Mont-Blanc.Duration: 6.45

Highland Dawn (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Highland Dawn portrays a sunrise in the Scottish Highlands, where stunning mountain scenery and clear air create a special atmosphere. A faster central section describes the area coming to life as the day begins, using the Scotch 'snaps' which are characteristic of traditional bagpipe music; but the serenity of the opening returns to bring the work to a peaceful close.
