    Comet Ride - Brian Balmages

Based on the Deep Impact mission in which scientists crashed a probe into a comet at approximately 23,000 mph, the composer writes, "So what would it be like if someone could actually grab on to one of these comets and take a ride through the solar system?" Conveying that very feeling, the work begins with a sighting of the comet, then takes off on a wild roller-coaster ride, including glimpses of the sheer beauty of outer space. Hold on for the ride of your life!

    Nature's Way - Gunther Schuller

From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Marco Polo (French text) - Antonio Rossi

Marco Polo (Venice, 1254), son of Venetian merchants, left in 1271 with his father Niccol and his uncle Matteo, towards the distant China at the court of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. The long journey, which lasted three and a half years, led the Polos to cross Turkey, Central Asia, the Pamir, and the Gobi desert. The intelligence of the young Marco and his curiosity towards new customs and languages raises the interest of the emperor so much that he decides to keep him at his court by appointing him ambassador. This assignment takes him to newly conquered southern China and other parts of southern Asia. In 1292, the Great Kublai Khan agrees, albeit reluctantly, to let him go.Marco, after 17 years at his service, can finally return to Venice, but not before completing a last mission for the Grand Khan: accompanying his niece, Princess Kokachin, to Persia, where she would marry. A few years after his arrival in Venice, Marco finds himself involved in a naval battle against the Genoese people in which the Venetians are defeated. Consequently, Marco is captured and taken to prison in Genoa. There, he meets the storyteller Rustichello da Pisa to whom he tells the story of his adventurous journey. After his release, Marco returned to Venice and led a comfortable life until his death in 1324.

    Frontier Spirit - R. Foster

This work is based on a ``western sounding'' motif, and is a musical portrayal of the energy, enthusiasm, and sense of mission that was brought westward by our western pioneers. The colorful history of the great cattle drives, the courage of the early settlers, and the true excitement of the old west is represented in this fine piece for Jr. High and Middle School bands.

    Titan - Mike Hannickel

A bold and powerful work for young bands! The aggressive theme sets the stage for this forceful original piece. In the spirit of The Planets by Holst, Titan-Moon of Saturn celebrates the multi-national Cassini-Huygens spacecraft that landed on Saturn's moon, Titan, on January 14, 2005. There are many questions about Titan that this daring space exploration mission will seek to answer some of them. Lebunus ex Daventria - Peter Kleine Schaars

Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars' composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!
