Fantasia on an Irish Hymn - John O'Reilly

Based on the beautiful Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision, this brilliant fantasia presents a variety of musical styles that will challenge and stimulate the developing band. A broad, modal fanfare opens the work followed by a full ensemble statement of the hymn. A rapid 12/8 percussion ostinatato in the style of traditional Irish folk music sets up the second section and continues under the haunting Mixolydian melody. A drone-style accompaniment and interesting counter-melodies add to the excitement before the hymn returns in a glorious maestoso. This unique combination of musical elements makes for another thrilling and inspiring new work from John O'Reilly!

Fantasia on British Sea Songs - Henry J. Wood / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Sir Henry J. Wood (1869--1944) wrote his Fantasia on British Sea Songs in 1905 to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of Admiral Lord Nelson's defeat of the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar. This wonderful concert band arrangement incorporates five of Wood's selected themes: "The Saucy Arethusa," "Tom Bowling," "Jack's the Lad," "Farewell and Adieu," and "See, the Conquering Hero Comes." Fantasia on the "Dargason" - Gustav Holst / arr. Michael Story

MIchael Story has skillfully re-scored the finale from Holst's making the combination of "Dargason Dance" and "Greensleeves" approachable for young band. Fantasie Brillante - Jean Baptiste Arban / arr. Donald Hunsberger

Scored for trumpet soloist Wynton Marsalis, Donald Hunsberger's band accompaniment arrangement of in Jean-Baptiste Arban's collection of Fantasias and Variations possesses a breadth of musical styles that demand strict formal analysis in addition to interpretative and technical requirements. The opening section features a flowing melodic passage followed by a technical passage with a return to the style of the opening melody. The theme is then stated which leads into three variations that employ variants in triplet groupings, quadruple 16th-note groupings, and finally, the ever-present triple tonguing, once again a primary technical resource utilized in this and others of the Fantasias. Fantasie Brillante is one of eleven solos in the Marsalis/Hunsberger project. The recital version of all eleven trumpet solos with piano accompaniment is available in one book for soloist use in preparation or for recital performance (00-35429). Hunsberger's band accompaniments for all eleven solos are available from Alfred either for sale or as rental works. Recordings of all eleven tunes performed by Wynton Marsalis with band accompaniment (performed by the Eastman Wind Ensemble, conducted by Donald Hunsberger) remain available from Sony BMG Music Entertainment, on iTunes and a variety of other retail sources.
