Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians - Robert W. Smith

There are a wide number of folk songs from the Appalachian region that are cherished by Americans. Smith selected a number of these tunes, including "The Dear Companion," "Pretty Saro," "Lisbon," "Green Bushes," "Lord Randall," "Lord Thomas." and "Fair Ellinor." Set in a more traditional concert band style, these more obscure folk songs have been scored at the concert band level in a Grainger-esque style by Robert W. Smith. (6:36)

Folksongs from the Eastern Counties - Ralph Vaughan Williams / arr. Douglas E. Wagner

Vaughan Williams traveled during 1903 to 1906, collecting folk songs first-hand from residents. Four of the fifteen titles he published for voice and piano in the original volume comprise , including "The Lost Lady Found," "The Lark in the Morning," "Bushes and Briars," and "Ward, the Pirate." Scored for concert band exactly as they were first published, with much of the accompanying material also being drawn from RVW's harmonizations and stylistic interpretations. For Those Who Have Served - David Marlatt

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. Sounding very patriotic in nature would make an ideal selection to be performed at a reflective event or simply to pay homage to the thousands of men and women who have served in the military or front line workers during times of crisis. The noble theme is first heard in a solo voice before moving to a more full sonority.
