A Midwinter Festival - Gene Milford

Using Gustav Holt's great carol In the Bleak Midwinter, the composer has provided a picture of a medieval celebration. Opening with church bells and a distant fanfare, a chorale setting of the carol is followed by a festive round dance. The work concludes with a joyful combination of the carol melody and the dance tune.

A Minor Holiday Celebration

Two Christmas classics have been masterfully re-arranged into a harmonic minor mode providing a new twist on these holiday favorites. Robert W. Smith has woven together "Joy to the World" and "Jingle Bells" with quotes from other familiar melodies including "The Dreidel Song" and "Hallelujah Chorus". A mother's love is boundless, never-ending, gentle, and caressing. Written upon the passing of the composer's mother, this composition opens with a pure and simple melodic statement that later opens into the warmth of the full ensemble sound, much like the comfort of a mother's embrace. The opening interval of the minor third is often heard by a child calling "mom-my," and the piece closes with the bells playing this motive.
