Little Snakes - Thomas C. Duffy

From the composer who brought us Snakes!, here is another opportunity for young musicians to become 'snake-charmers.' Glass bottles lightly tapped with pencils make the sound of a gentle rain. Seagull sounds made with clarinet mouthpieces paint the picture of a lighthouse at the shore. What happens when little snakes get loose' Trombone smears, of course! Everyone has fun with this exotic sounding work.

Little Suite for Band - Randall Standridge

This wonderful, original suite has elements of folk melodies and is an ideal way to introduce students to multi-movement works. Students will learn multiple meters, key signatures, and styles in the four movements, titled Ayre, Gigue, Ballad, and March. Rewarding and extremely accessible, the music uses a careful instrumentation and range to make sure even smaller ensembles will sound full and confident.

Liturgical Fanfare - Robert W. Smith

The entire work is based upon the opening rhythmic figure of two quarter notes, two eighths, and a quarter note. is a bit more aggressive in interpretation than most works composed for this level and is an exceptional choice for a concert opener or final work. Liturgical Music for Band, Opus 33 - Martin Mailman

, was completed in 1963. Since then, the piece has become a landmark work in the band repertoire with countless performances by several generations of students. The piece is based on four movements selected from the Mass "Proper" and "Ordinary." The band plays in a chime-like style to announce the opening movement, "Introit." The second movement has the same three sections as the "Kyrie" from the Mass (). The theme of the third movement is the same rhythm as the word "Gloria," and the style is jubilant, just like the Mass text ("Glory to God in the highest . . . "). The fourth movement, "Alleluia," features an energetic fugue and an exciting climax.

Lo, How a Rose - Mark Williams

This beautiful carol truly shines in this sensitive, creative treatment. After a gentle introduction and an introspective first statement of the tune, a key change signals the pairing of the main theme with "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Loch Lomond

Here are two contrasting treatments of this beautiful Scottish tune in a unique arrangement for young band. The tune is first presented using the lush harmonies, full textures and interesting inner lines that have become a Dave Black trademark. The second treatment is an enchanting dance-like march in 6/8 time that starts with a snare drum introduction, followed by open fifths in the low brass. The tune is developed with the addition of a woodwind countermelody before a final statement of the tune brings the piece to a close. Great for working on phrasing, balance and dynamics. Loco Motion - Todd Stalter

"Loco Motion" is a musical word play on the title, with emphasis on the "loco" (in essence, "crazy rhythm"). The wind parts are quite rhythmic, even on static pitches, and players have the opportunity to duel with the percussion section using their hands and feet. London Bridge

London Bridge was originally written for brass quintet and later scored for concert band. Below is the composer recalling the quintet version's premiere. London Bridge was designed to appeal to children, but also to the child remaining in the rest of us. It kind of developed asit went along and ended up where it is today if that makes any sense at all. A few days after the first draft was finished I took it to a clinic for high school band members at one of theAnchorage schools. The clinic was put on by the Canadian Brass who were in Anchorage on a concert tour. They sight read it at the clinic. I even asked them to autograph the parts. They did. I did not have the nerve to ask them what they thought about it, and they offered meno opinion. That may have been good. This is a terrific novelty piece that shows off the whole band, quotes famous pieces and allows the students to really have fun.

Londonderry Air

Titled for the County Londonderry in Ireland, this famous song is performed in Northern Ireland as a victory anthem. One of the loveliest of British Isle folk songs, this venerable tune has many versions. This arrangement, with its lush contemporary setting, is both charming and tasteful and well within the playing capabilities of the young band. (Grade 2)
