The Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge Mountains have a rich history of folk music handed down by the families of the settlers in this region. Four of these wonderful songs have been included in this setting for concert band: the spirited "Jack-a-Roe," the haunting "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies," the very popular "Tom Dooley" (arranged here in a most unexpected manner), and finally, the beautiful "Barbara Allen." Arranged for the United States Marine Band at the request of President John F. Kennedy, this outstanding march is now available for the first time. The melody is a traditional folk song with words by Robert Dwyer Joyce (1830-1883). An outstanding addition to the serious band library.

The Bronze Age - Frank McKinney

The Bronze Age saw the invention of the wheel, the ox-drawn plow, and the first uses of metal. This dramatic and expressive composition introduces the key of concert D minor, yet easily remains within the grade 0.5 range. There are simple two-note slurs, dynamics from pp to ff, and colorful lines for every player. Unusual harmonies and melodies with supportive percussion make this a good choice for teaching a wide range of musical concepts to developing bands. Written by Frank McKinney for concert band.

The Buffalo Suite

Everything Buffalo! This one's got something for everyone. Scored in mini-suite format, the three movements include a straight-forward presentation of "Buffalo Gals" followed by an assignable solo with accompaniment in "Home on the Range." The suite draws to a cheery conclusion with a swing-style setting of "Shuffle Off to Buffalo." A tremendous choice for both teaching and performance.

The Celts of County Clare - Robert Sheldon

by Robert Sheldon is inspired by the music of Ireland. Specifically, the type of folk music heard in the County Clare region, located on the central southwest coast. While much of the music played in the pubs is rhythmic dance music, the area is also known for some lovely ballads. (5:15)

The Cha Cha Street Parade - Frank McKinney

Who doesn't love a cha cha? This one takes place in the streets of Cuba with infectious rhythms and a lot of cowbell. Go on a cha cha holiday with your band, and you'll have the audience dancing in the aisles.

The Challenger - John Kinyon

Here's a sure-favorite concert march for the young band, expertly written by the ever-reliable John Kinyon. All of the traditional march elements are effectively presented and the trio section features a melody played by clarinets and saxes interwoven with a floating flute countermelody. (Grade 1)

The Cherry Tree

is a beautiful and lyrical folk song dating back as early as the 15th century in the English Midlands. Having traveled all around western Europe, this folk tune eventually found its way to America, gaining popularity in the South in early 1900s and again in the 1960s. This setting, by composer Brian Beck, captures the beauty and simplicity of the original ballad while encouraging musical expression and smooth phrasing. (3:21) Correlated to Level 5.
