Blessed Are They - Johannes Brahms / arr. Clarence Barber, Barbara Buehlan

Johannes Brahms was not a religious man in the usual sense of the term, so it should be of no surprise that when he wrote the German Requiem; it did not follow the prescribed five movement form of the traditional requiem mass, but instead contained seven movements. The first time Brahms combined orchestra with chorus and soloists, it is considered to be his choral masterwork. While the style is unabashedly romantic with all the depth and beauty associated with the music of Brahms, the form is clearly influenced by Handel and reflects Brahms' intensive study of earlier masters. is the sublime first movement of the German Requeim; and the original version pairs the chorus with the orchestra to create a heavy, somber mood. This skillfully crafted arrangement for flexible instrumentation, edited by Clarence Barber, makes this work playable by as few as five players up to large bands and orchestras, and everything in between. provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. Blue Ridge Rhapsody - John Kinyon

In A-B-A form, this piece consists of two major themes, both of which are stated in the 16-measure introductory section. Although the composition is in large part romantic in style, it offers young performers an opportunity to experience the spritely 6/8 of the Allegro moderato as well as the romantic legato of the Andante cantabile section. Blues for a Killed Kat - Jack End / arr. Frederick Fennell

Early one winter morning after playing at a Jazz club, composer and clarinetist Jack End observed a cat that had lain dead for a few days to be still in the dimly lit gutter in front of Sibley Music Library. Wen he dropped the instruments in his studio he sat at the piano to express his sadness - what else but with a Blues. His band played Blues for a Killed Kat for years and so did those who gathered for an Eastman School of Music class reunion in 1960 when Frederick Fennell asked him to score it for The Eastman Wind Ensemble. The Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra recorded it twenty-five years later in 1986 when Jack End died in his 67th year.

"The Bonnie Blue Flag" is an 1861 marching song from the American Civil War. Deriving its tune from an Irish song, with lyrics penned by Harry McCarthy, it won popularity in both Union and Confederate armies.
