Chinese Dragon Parade - David Marlatt

The dragon dance is often part of a parade during Chinese New Year and other special events. It is performed by a team of skilled dancers using poles to manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon. The colorful display combined with driving percussive music is a truly amazing spectacle to see. There are four different dragons represented here---each with a unique character and personality---that are then combined with each other in different ways musically.

Chorale and Mystic Chant - Timothy Loest

A beautiful hymn with rich harmonies and suspensions opens this fine work for beginning bands. As the lyrical melody reaches a final cadence, the piece then moves into a bombastic chant with a wealth of percussion. The theme is presented in different textures and students will explore the basic components of a fugue in an easy setting. Christmas A La Mode

Use the holiday season to introduce and reinforce the importance of scales with your students. Robert W. Smith's Christmas A La Mode is an arrangement of "Jingle Bells" that takes the band and audience on a journey through the traditional modes. Following a brief introduction, our journey begins in the Dorian mode. We continue our sleigh ride through Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian before an ominous stop in the Locrian mode.
