Quest for the Throne

Quest for the Throne evokes images of kings and castles, knights and horses, and dragons in all their glory. Itis a bold and aggressive piece throughout, but includes a contrasting, lush secondary theme for variety. In his typical style, Clark uses forceful figures and strong melodic content to give students music they will want to practice and play again and again.

Quiet Pride

Written in honor of beloved directors, this piece is inspired by the qualities they instilled in students: "Loyalty, Dignity, Hard Work, a Strong Competitive Spirit, and a Sense of Quiet Pride." This piece opens with timpani and baritone solos, building to melodies and countermelodies that rise and fall with emotion through rubato tempos, ritardandos, accelerandos, and dynamic phrasing.

Quintessence

Composer Joseph Compello draws on his many years of experience teaching beginners to give us an exciting new contest-style piece for very young groups. Quintessence consists of simple rhythms and notes, but is also quite musical, with an aggressive, driving feeling. It's a great way introduce two eighth notes that are repeated. Your first year group will sound more advanced than their years.

Rainbow in the Clouds

Rainbow in the Cloudsis based on a traditional spiritual, possibly an African-American song from the 19th century, entitled God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds. Composer Carol Brittin Chambers was inspired by the poet Maya Angelou to create this setting of the song. With rich and beautiful harmonies throughout, this piece will highlight students' musicianship. This serves as a welcome change of pace on any concert or contest program.

Rays of Light

Rays of Light is an upbeat, positive piece for developing ensembles inspired by the return of light after a dark storm. Composer George Sweet has an indelible style that incorporates a fresh harmonic perspective not commonly found in pieces at this level with simple, tuneful melodic gestures. Every section of the band is given a chance to shine in this delightful new piece for beginning band.

Reaching the Summit

Reaching the Summit is a composition for beginning bands in their first year of playing. Beginning band students are continuously learning new skills on their instruments and striving to eventually play a full piece of music with non-unison parts. In this piece, young musicians build upon each other's sound to reach the peak of their musical journey.
