Start Your Engines

Start Your Engines plays homage to the iconic phrase "Gentlemen, start your engines," traditionally used at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This exciting concert selection for young band features the percussion section with opportunities for doubling parts if needed. The band "revs up" right at the beginning as the opposing eighth notes in the drums evoke a race car engine at the starting line. As the piece continues, the winds have opportunities to shine in comfortable ranges with reasonable technical demands. Start Your Engines is great for helping young bands sound their best at concert and beyond.

Steel Driving Man

This piece is based on the legend of John Henry. Despite being considered folklore, John Henry appears to be based on a true story of a powerful steel driving man who was part of an 1800's railroad tunneling crew. The music depicts the intensity and exertion of a legendary contest between John Henry and a new steam powered machine, which he ultimately won. A three-note motif represents Henry as the music moves through dramatic character and tempo changes, including a moment for the entire band to sing!

Step Up!

This band section feature for beginning students, using only simple rhythms and the first six notes learned, is an excellent showcase for every instrument in the band. Use it to recruit, for assemblies, and first concerts. An excellent concert opener!

Stone Mountain Stomp

In the style of a country hoedown, this tune is foot-stomping and knee-slapping fun. The piece includes rollicking eighth-note and sixteenth-note figures that should be played vigorously and with strict attention to dynamics. A great piece to add some variety to your concert program!

Storm Chaser

Off in the distance we hear the storm begin, the thunder roar, and see the the lightning strike as we take off with this dramatic piece, depicting the sounds of a violent thunderstorm. Educator and composer Kevin Mixon gives us a bold new piece that includes the sound of finger snapping (to mimic rain and thunder) to add to the overall effectiveness of this dynamic piece. Students will love the angular, strong melody and will sound great in contest or festival.

Street Beat Christmas - Traditional

Arranger Joseph Compello brings us a nice holiday collage that features the percussion section playing "real" street beats. Beside being an effective and fun arrangment, your percussion section will learn different roll-offs and streets that will be useful for parades or other events where street beats are needed.
