Off in the distance we hear the storm begin, the thunder roar, and see the the lightning strike as we take off with this dramatic piece, depicting the sounds of a violent thunderstorm. Educator and composer Kevin Mixon gives us a bold new piece that includes the sound of finger snapping (to mimic rain and thunder) to add to the overall effectiveness of this dynamic piece. Students will love the angular, strong melody and will sound great in contest or festival.

Named for the opening motif, which quickly ascends like the rising sun, this march offers several teaching moments. Students get to work on independent parts playing in imitation or call and response, dynamic development, staccatos, accents, and minimal accidentals. Every section plays the melody at some point which makes this an excellent choice for demonstration or recruitment concerts. Perfect for concerts and contest, and even graduation as a processional.

Sunrise on South Padre

Written about Texas' South Padre Island, this concert and contest selection will introduce performers to easy alternating time signatures. Starting slowly to represent the sun rising, the day soon begins with a faster section featuring different ostinato rhythms, varied dynamics and active percussion writing. Performing the articulations at the indicated tempo is a challenge but it sounds good at any appropriate tempo.
