American Ballad Variants

A fresh and spirited treatment of the traditional American ballad Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair, this fine piece for a developing band starts with a slow and atmospheric introduction featuring solos by flute and trumpet that hint at the tune. The main section sets the ballad to a driving Latin beat, but the slow reflective mood returns at the end with solos for clarinet, bass clarinet and flute.

American Barndance - Richard L. Saucedo

Rhythmic and energetic, this lively work contains elements of an early American character but also features a poignant, calmer section with a lighter texture and interlaced lyric motifs. The piece builds to a dramatic peak with apowerful and majestic statement by the full ensemble. The final segment, however, becomes more and more frenzied with mixed meters and relentless percussion figures as it races to an exciting conclusion. American Bell Carol - Robert W. Smith

Robert W. Smith's extremely popular series based on the Ukrainian Bell Carol continues with this setting in an American style. Beginning with a Sousa quote, our "American Bell Carol" continues with a driving rock groove. Mr. Smith has cleverly woven the melody to "America The Beautiful" into the second statement providing a very unique teaching opportunity. Written for middle school to community bands, this will be a favorite for years to come!
