As I Walked Through The Meadow - Pierre la Plante

Pierre La Plante is well-known for his mastery at creating concert band settings of folk tunes with Grainger-esque style. "As I Walked Through The Meadow" is a pastorale setting of a traditional English folk tune that, with careful attention to intonation and expressive playing, will give your ensemble's musicianship a chance to shine. The middle section is a variation on the main theme which returns, builds to a climax and ends quietly in a somewhat wistful manner. A beautiful choice for concert or contest change of pace. This beautiful work uses lyrical themes, rich scoring, gentle percussion, and dynamics to paint a picture of quiet reflection of the day that has passed, then builds to a dramatic climax before peacefully fading into the night. There are several opportunities for flute and clarinet solos. A perfect choice for concert or contest, this work provides an excellent opportunity to teach breath control, phrasing, tone, and ensemble playing.

As One Listens to the Rain - Daniel French

As One Listens to the Rain is a marriage of two distinct musical ideas. The first, a solitary, solemn melody, is introduced in the trumpet and cloaked in an aura of slowly shifting transparent harmonies. This idea soon gives wayto flowing lines and falling gestures that invoke an image of cascading rainfall. A hymn-like interlude provides a brief respite before the return of the rain which, in this final form, spins and tumbles over itself. A stirringand evocative work for modern winds. Dur: 6:30

As Shadows Fall - Rob Romeyn

Beautiful and heartfelt, "As Shadows Fall" is an outstanding lyrical work for young band. A beautiful and memorable melody is first introduced by the flute and gradually grows amid changing textures and harmonies ultimately leading to a soaring and dramatic final climax. The music then ends as it began, with a gentle breeze, quietly fading away amid the setting sun. The many opportunities for lyrical performance technique and expressive qualities make this a superlative choice for concert or festival use. A valuable addition to the young band repertoire.

As Spirits Take Flight - Earl

Uplifting and bright, this fine overture was written for the Salt Lake Symphonic Winds. Images of flight are suggested through the composer's use of rhythm and tempo. The middle section has solo lines for trumpet and clarinet and is beautifully scored utilizing the many different colors available to the wind medium. Various cross cueings allow the conductor/director freedom to tailor the piece to fit a particular ensemble. An excellent choice for high school and community bands alike.
