At Dawn They Slept - Jay Bocook

Premiered at Pearl Harbor, this new work from Jay Bocook is a musical remembrance of that fateful day that launched our country into WWII. Opening with a beautiful and flowing melody featuring the woodwinds, the day begins with a lone bugler but with ominous undertones foretelling the chaos to follow. The attack is depicted using inventive scoring textures, dissonances and percussion. In the final segment, the opening melody returns juxtaposed over a strong rhythmic pulse in a hopeful look to the future. A powerful musical statement from one of today's most gifted composers!

Personal stories from two generations of servicemen led to this charming and unique trumpet trio. Written in honor of the composer's grandfather, this setting represents the atmosphere in the barracks "after hours" when the soldiers aren't quite as gung-ho as usual. Unfortunately, inspections can happen without warning, and the troops quickly assemble, clean up their bunks, and display their staunch military discipline... until the officer leaves, and life can return to normal. With just minor tempo adjustments, this delightful piece is effective for players and audiences of all ages. A great, light-hearted bit of fun for your next concert!

At Kitty O'Shea's - Johan de Meij

For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton & Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance. Time for another round At Kitty O'Shea's!
