By the River - Jan Van der Roost
Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties, making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost createswill keep the audience engaged through to the very last note!

By the Way - Vladimir Yefremov
Inspiring popular music from the Ukraine. Perhaps one would only expect original folk-music to come out of this part of Europe but nothing could be further from the truth. By the Way is a delightfully swinging little piece which allows you to pull out all stops: a very welcome addition to the popular genre indeed. Your musicians will have great fun in performing this little piece.

By Virtue of the Skies - John Prescott
The composers father, Jack Prescott, was born in 1922, and at the age of 17 became the youngest pilot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was somewhat of a daredevil, flying under drawbridges and doing snap rolls down deserted beaches at an altitude of 50 feet. During World War II he joined the Army Air Corps and flew C-47 transport planes from India to China over the Himalayan mountains. He flew 83 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by President Harry Truman. The heroism of these flights in the face of severe adversity is depicted by the dignified thematic material of the opening. Somewhat dissonant fanfares appear at times, reminding us of the constant dangers that were ever present, before the work concludes in ultimate triumph.
