Chant and Celebration - David Gorham

Commissioned by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, this distinctive work for developing band is highlighted by two contrasting sections. A quiet opening is flavored with percussion sounds reminiscent of Native American music, while lyric woodwinds float above, weaving expressively hypnotic melodic lines. This spellbinding effect is then broken by a joyous and spirited celebration that unfolds in a delightfully uplifting manner, closing the work in a grand and joyous fashion.

Using only the notes of the C-minor scale, Chant and Ritual Dance is an undemanding yet useful showpiece for a young band. This composition draws its mood from the brave opening statement that is reiterated in the Chant portion of the piece and also becomes the basis of the Ritual Dance.

Chant and Savage Band - Brian Balmages

Contemporary harmonies and interesting colors are at the center of this innovative work. While well within the ability of young musicians, this piece has an uncharacteristically mature sound that will captivate your audience. After a mesmorizing lyrical opening, percussion begins the savage dance that grows more and more powerful as the piece progresses. Optional percussionists throughout the audience can enhance the entire experience as the dancers continue till utter exhaustion and collapse to the ground. Very compelling! (4:10)

A masterpiece for younger bands. The lonely, mysterious "chant," accompanied by fragments of muted percussion goes through several harmonic transformations before giving way to a big, bold celebratory refrain. Great melodies for everyone!
