Elegy - Melvin L. Shelton

A touching and intense memoriam piece, the mechanics are on the easy side of Grade 4, but the demand for tone quality and control in tenuto passages and long slurred phrases calls for the best of musicianship from any group. The "Adagio e Rubato" tempo indication invites the kind of wonderfully expressive ensemble playing that should probably make up a larger part of band literature than it does today. Over a quiet unifying heartbeat from the timpani, the band explores the emotions felt after a tragic personal loss. A soaring F Horn solo (cued in Trumpet. and Alto Saxophone) leads poignantly toward a gentle Orchestra Bells and Wind Chime ending.

Elegy & Scherzo was written at the request of cellist Yuki Ito, to commemorate the 150th birthyear in 2023 of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943). Composer Johan de Meij used some hints and quotes from Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (opus 27) and the Symphonic Dances (opus 45), to embrace the sound world of the Russian master. Elegy & Scherzo was premiered on October 27, 2023, in the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia by the Band of the Slovenian Armed Forces, with Yuki Ito as the cello soloist and the composer conducting.

Written to honor the memory of President John F. Kennedy, this somber work has been a staple in the repertoire for many years and is on most lists as one of the top pieces in literature. It is our hope that by this re-promotion, a new generation of band directors and musicians will become familiar with this classic work.
