Barn Dance and Cowboy Hymn (Concert Band - Score Only) - Sparke, Philip

A brilliantly inventive miniature from this gifted British composer. Philip Sparke takes the famous dance, but gives it new twists and turns of rhythm and meter. Halfway through the cowboys are heard singing in the distance and everything stops for a moment. Dance interjections cut through the tranquility, and soon everything starts up again. A great showcase!

Barnaby Behaves Badly (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob

This vivacious programme number was written for Barnaby (more often known as Barney), Simba's (see At The 'Splash' with Sim) predecessor in the composer's Golden Retriever succession. He was a very laid back and happy soul, not the brightest-ever retriever, but with the potential for a little mischief when the mood took him. It was written with the intention of being eminently playable so both the range and the technical demands are carefully controlled and the scoring is designed to make the music sound strong with a band of less experienced players.

The golden age of daredevil pilots comes to life in Len Orcino's delightful "Barnstormers March." This rousing march begins with a ratchet as the cranking of the propeller. The engine sputters to life and off the listener goes on his free ride into the air, as the music emulates the biplane and all its loops, dives, tricks and stunts. When Karl King was conducting circus bands he would frequently edit his marches so the same composition could be used for contrasting acts (for example a lion act one time, and a trapeze act the next). In the same spirit, Thomas Leslie has creatively repurposed this familiar march to suit an imaginary clown act; complete with novelty percussion sounds and a few surprises sprinkled in.
