Cambrian Explosion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.

The Cambrian period of our planet's geological history (roughly 500 million years ago) saw an explosion of plant and animal diversity evolving into many of the complex life forms familiar today. Richard Saucedo gives us an "explosion" of musical forms and surprises in this fast-paced and powerful work for mature bands. A recurring mallet and timpani pattern provides unity amidst a diverse musical palette that ranges from jazzy to celebratory. The sudden appearance of the familiar hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" is both stunning and dramatic as it ties the entire work together. Wonderfully creative!Duration: 3:10

Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark). There is a momentary reference to Yr Deryn Pur (The White Bird) at the end of the second section. Cambridge Intrada (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

This short processional was designed to be played as a concert opener but can equally be used as a sort of extended fanfare at presentations, graduation ceremonies and similar occasions. Its title evokes the noble grandeur of the university buildings in the English town of Cambridge where pomp and circumstance are still a normal part of life. A fanfare-like passage opens and closes the work and sandwiches a more legato central section.Duration: 1:15
