Commissioned by Edwin Frank Goldman for the American Bandmasters Association, Paul Creston's Celebration Overture was premiered at the 1955 ABA convention. His third work for symphonic band, it is a standard of concert band repertoire and is included on several state contest lists. Celebration Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul

Celebration Overture was composed in the summer of 1976 and was given first prize judged by William Alwyn whose film scores Philip Lane has worked on for commercial recordings in the last 10 years. It is truly a celebratory piece with a dramatic pyramid opening, followed by the melodic introduction in solo clarinet, then solo trumpet, before accelerating to a rousing burst of celebration. A rich slower middle section leads into the return of celebration. This piece is included on several lists of recommended festival and contest literature. The fanfare theme is then developed in the woodwinds and taken up by the whole wind band, appearing in different guises and with different counter-melodies. Finally, the opening is restated in a much shorter form by the whole band playing fortissimo.

Celestial Prospect (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Heaton, Wilfred - Wheeler, Alastair

Wilfred Heaton's compositions have a worldwide appreciation and although his output was small it is work of the highest integrity and calibre. The history surrounding 'Celestial Prospect' is somewhat sketchy. The composer describes it as a 're-casting' of an earlier work written sometime in the 1940's the score of which is now lost. The theme 'Come comrades dear' has been known from Christian Mission days and reflects the composer's penchant for old Salvation Army tunes which are simple and direct in character. The following 5 variations contain much interest and originality including a beautiful 'elegy to departed comrades.
