Filled with tuneful melodies and an energetic lilt throughout, Cloud Dancing is sure to have great appeal for students as well as audiences. There is a wealth of teachable elements as well; developing confidence in 3/4, use of simple mixed meters in the slow middle section, and brief solo opportunities for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, and Trumpet. Cloud Factory is an industrial piece, inspired by a huge steel plant in Holland. Following an opening section that recalls the sounds of the nearby North Sea, we hear the factory locomotives, the machinery and finally, with metallic timbres, the steel product is presented in musical form. Score and Parts. Commissioned for the 2002 Indiana All-State Band, Cloudburst is an adaptation of Whitacre's acclaimed choral work of the same name. Lush and luminescent, Cloudburst combines hand bells, thunder sheets and the audience (snapping their fingers), transforming the entire theater into a magnificent thunderstorm. A profoundly moving work for musicians and audience.

Score & Parts. Cloudcatcher Fells was originally written as a Brass Band work, but was transcribed into the contemporary wind ensemble while remaining true to the original. The title comes from a poem by David Wright, and the work is associated with various places (mostly mountains) in the Lake District. The emphasis is on the Patterdale area, though other parts of the Lake District are also referred to, and the work falls into a series of sections which group themselves into larger units, so that is becomes almost a four-movement work played continuously. Includes: Great Gable; Grasmoor; Grisedale Tarn; Haystacks; Catchedicam (Catstye Cam); Angle Tarn; Grisedale Brow; Striding Edge; Helvellyn. Duration: 17 mins.
