Dances and Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan, inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers, accompanied by quiet, solemn music to provide contrast. Dances Fantastique

This exciting new work for concert band is a set of three delightful dances. Opening with a bold fanfare statement, the first dance reveals the melodic material that is the basis for all three movements. The title of this movement, Double Dance, is derived from the second statement of the melody, appearing in doubled rhythmic values. The second movement, Round Dance, the melody is written as a three part round. You could not have a Round Dance without a Square Dance, which is the title of final movement. Lots of fun percussion instruments add interesting timbres throughout. This interesting and clever composition is perfect for contest and festival.

The themes morph into several different dance feels throughout the remainder of the piece always keeping you guessing what will come next. Brand, Geoffrey has done a masterful job of adapting the score for the modern concert band.

These attractive settings should appeal to many young/learner bands and prove to be a popular item on their concert programme.

This piece has an attitude! A bit jazzy, a little sassy, and a touch of glitz and glam certainly sets this piece apart. Fast-paced rhythmic riffs in a minor key alternate with soaring melodies in a major key. A thoughtful and expressive lyrical section provides contrast. Duration: 5:00

Jan Van der Roost composed Dances of Innocence to commemorate a girl who passed away at the tender age of 14. In contrast to the sombre, joyless tone such a memory usually invokes, it is a rather cheerful work that reflects the innocence and light heartedness of a child. It does open in a serious mood, but quickly becomes more energetic and turns into a dance. Dances of Innocence is an ode to all the beauty, sincerity and cheerfulness that a child radiates.Duration: 6:00

Dances of Time (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Stuart

Dances of Time was commissioned by the National School Band Association and first performed on 10 June 2000 at the Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire, University of Central England, by the Aldridge School Wind Band , conducted by the composer. Time Present, Past and Future.... the melodic themes of this dance travel from the 5/4 meter of the present day, to the 3/4 waltzes of the past, to the 6/8 accented phrases of the future. Players will recognize the themes as they explore the variations and new meters to each dance.
