FANTASY ON THEMES FROM TCHAIKOVSKY (Young Band) - Erickson, Frank

Tchaikovsky's musical progress was based upon impulse, rather than upon intellectual conviction. It was his sincere response to emotional impulse and the freedom with which he ranged over almost every field of musical creation which made him as great as he was. Frank Erickson passed away before he could provide rehearsal suggestions for this piece. This was one of his final numbers.

Fantasy on Yankee Doodle (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Williams, Mark

This is a refreshing and exciting work! Yankee Doodle seems like such a simple melody, but it's amazing how well Mark Williams develops it using a set of variations. Although opened by a humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba, you'll soon find that this is not a novelty piece . . . the varied styles and moods are displayed in well-written music that is perfectly held together by the original theme. Fantasy Sketches (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vinson, Johnnie

Drawing inspiration from books and films of fantasy adventure, Johnnie's three-movement suite explores a variety of descriptive moods and styles. The first movement (Wizards) has a noble and grand flavor, while the second (Elves) is more playful and mischievous in design. The concluding movement (Talking Animals) uses rhythmic energy and mixed meters in creating a bit of a rambunctious setting. Themes from the earlier movements are then brought back for the grand finale.Duration: 8:00

Fantasy Tales (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Swerts, Piet

This work, reminiscent of a film score, describes the history of the Dutch town Horn. A broad lyrical theme, played by the horns, depicts the history of this town on the river Meuse. A cheerful Allegro represents rural life around the town and its castle. Following this the horn theme returns and the music changes dramatically. A drum roll symbolises the times of war that the town and castle have known. The threatening music eventually develops once more into the hopeful horn theme, a sign of reconstruction and the future.Duration: 10:45
