In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, caused him to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!Duration: 2.15

Mass of the Children represents something new in the composer's work insofar as it was conceived with an integral role for a children's choir alongside an adult mixed choir, two soloists, and orchestra (now band). The role of the children's choir is to add a further dimension to the traditional Latin Mass sung by the adult choir, sometimes commenting, sometimes amplifying the meaning and mood. His musical understanding, sense of melody, harmony and orchestration are oftentimes fully capable of telling the story even without the text. In the setting for band alone, the children's choir part is generally set for solo trumpet.

The skilful concert band transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum's most monumental works. Vasily Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. Throughout the years, composers have found inspiration for their works in simple folk melodies. Tchaikovsky loved Russian folk music all his life. Whilst composing his 2nd symphony, he was inspired by farmers' songs that fascinated him during a stay in Kamenka (near Kiev). He composed this symphony in 1872/73 and used the melody from the song The Stork as the main theme for the Finale. Long a staple of the string orchestra literature, the most cherished sections of the Finale from Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for String Orchestra" has been transcribed for concert band. Finale: The Holy City (from Visions) (Flute or Violin Solo with Concert Band and Optional Treble Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul

Visions is one of John Rutter's most recent compositions (2016). It was written for violin solo, treble voice choir, strings and harp. This arrangement maintains the violin solo as an option, but it is presented as a flute (and optionally with a movement for alto flute) solo with band. The vocal parts are included as an option, but the arrangement is also scored so that it may be performed without the treble choir. Visions is a tribute to Jerusalem, with the four movements titled: 1. Jerusalem the blessed; 2. Arise, shine; 3. Lament for Jerusalem; 4. Finale: The holy city. A showcase for the soloist, the depth of meaning and feeling in this music will make it an important addition to the repertoire of the Concert/Wind Band.
