A Sousa Celebration (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sousa, John Philip - Noble, Paul

A Sousa Celebration is the arranger's collection of excerpts from several of Sousa's interesting marches, creating a patriotic presentation of greater length than the typical march. This selection includes a variety of content, offering a showpiece to several sections of the band: Hail to the Spirit of Liberty, composed for the Paris Exposition of 1900, for the unveiling of the Lafayette Monument on July 4; Yorktown Centennial (1881), written to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the last important battle of the Revolutionary War: the surrender at Yorktown; Mother Hubbard March (1885), based on nursery rhymes; "Three Blind Mice," "Thus the Farmer Sows His Seed," "Old Mother Hubbard," "Hey Diddle Diddle," "Little Redbird in the Tree," "London Bridge is Falling Down," "Scotland the Brave," and "The Minstrel Boy." The celebration concludes with excerpts from Sousa's most celebrated march, The Stars and Stripes Forever.

The Spa of the title relates to Cheltenham, England and seeks to evoke both its peaceful and bustling character, creating a montage of streets, parks and overall atmosphere, with a central section suggesting the Antarctic explorer, Edward Wilson, a fellow Cheltonian whose statue looks out upon the town's major boulevard, the Promenade.

A Spanish Christmas Carol (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Millstone, Patrick

Rondeau of the Shepherds, so ran the official title of the famous Dutch Christmas carol Midden in de winternacht. In 1948, Dutch poet and writer Harry Prenen wrote this text. The melody is known by the 17th/18th century organ composers of suites Daquin, Balbastre and Dandrieu. Rondeau of the Shepherds is subtitled Catalan Christmas Carol because of its origins in a Spanish (probably Catalan) Christmas song from the late Middle Ages, El Desembre congelat. The motives of this song (shepherds, flutes, drums) demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and give a picture of the late medieval Christmas experience. A Spirit Eternal

A beautiful and powerful hymn-like setting, "A Spirit Eternal" was written as a memorial to the composer's former Miami University student Stephanie Markham Minge who passed away in 2012 after a 7 year battle with cancer. Simple melodies, lush harmonies and soaring countermelodies bring tribute to a beautiful and courageous life that ended to soon. Beautiful and emotional!

When Johnson, Stuart was appointed music advisor for Staffordshire, England, it turned out that the the concert band were soon to perform in a huge festival for young musicians in The Royal Albert Hall, and so far an opening piece had not yet been chosen ....
