Howl's Moving Castle - Joe Hisaishi
Based on Hayao Miyazaki's animation "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004), this Symphonic Fantasy for Band was arranged for Neagari Jr. High School Band (Kazuhiro Tanaka- director) in Nomi, Ishikawa, Japan as concert contest non-test repertoire.This work consists of 5 scenes which are freely adapted from Image Symphonic Suite (music released before the film's premier) and The Soundtrack:1. The Allure of Dawn (Image Symphonic Suite)2. Wandering Sophie (Soundtrack)3. The Courageous Cavalry (Soundtrack)4. The Boy Who Swallowed the Star (Soundtrack)5. The Merry-go-round of Life (Soundtrack)To maximize the wind band's unique sound and function, I have taken some liberty in spreading active roles throughout the ensemble. The richness of the music of the sub-contient is an eternal inspiration, showing music to be the fusion and balance of opposites: improvisation and calculation, freedom and form, rhythm and melody.Indian musical thinking has acted through thecenturies as a model for articulating thought through sound.I have based my piece on an Indian temple dance in which a short motivic nugget generates garlands and trails of sonic colour.The raga-form is maintained, with anintruduction comprizing a presentation of the scale-material, out of which the sonic nugget is forged.The work was premiered by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen conducted by Peter Szilvay in 2007.This newversion was edited by thecomposer in 2015.

James Rae is the man who put fun into woodwind and brass teaching. His many compositions, especially in the jazz and blues idioms, have often featured on examination syllabuses. Recent years have seen his publications of easy flexible ensembles for younger players and now he turns his attention to the wind band. In his series The Concert Band Collection, he has written exciting new pieces for the standard concert band line up. Attention is given to each instrument so that the technical and musical requirements do not exceed UK Grade 2. Buffalo RockThis piece has been specifically composed for bands in their early stages of development. All instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register. After a short, powerful introduction, the music immediately kicks in to a driving rock mode, setting the scene for the remainder of the piece. Strong rhythmic playing is required from all sections of the band in order to achieve a solid performance. A Royal PortraitThis piece is very regal in style and portrays all the pomp and circumstance that surrounds a high-profile state occasion. It is to be performed with a full, warm sound and players must resist the temptation to overblow as this could have a detrimental effect on tone quality and intonation. As with Buffalo Rock, the instrumental parts have been written in comfortable keys and ranges with all clarinet parts staying entirely in the low register.

Handel in Rock - Luc Gistel
Handel's Tochter Zion is one of the most beautiful hymns ever composed. Luc Gistel has arranged this musical gem in a variety of styles using many of the outstanding rhythmic elements of modern music. The piece opens with the original theme in all its natural pure sound, transforming into music in a pop style. The middle section is romantic with meandering peaceful and sensitive lines. This is followed by a reappearance of the pop melody. The piece comes to a close with the return of the initial theme.
