Rejoice! - Naoya Wada
Rejoice! was commissioned by the Kitakyushu City Foundation for Promoting Arts and Culture (KICPAC) on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the city on Feburary 10, 1063. The composer grew up in this city and feels at home there. Kitakyushu was born from the merger of five municipalities of Moji, Kokura, Tobata, Yahata and Wakamatsu centred on the ancient city of Kokura. These five former cities are represented in five themes in distinct keys at the beginning of the piece: G major, e major, g major again, Bb major and F major. Rejoice! is dedicated to the city of Kitakyushu and Mr. Kenji Kitahashi, mayor of the city. The premire was held on March3, 2013 at the Kitakyushu Soleil Hall, performed by the Comfort Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mr. Satoru Yoshihara.

Basses Are Aces - Joseph Compello
Designed by a master offeriting for this grade level, Bases Are Aces was written to encourage the low brass and woodwind players, while still being fun for the whole band to play. A great recruitment piece, it will motivate the frequently overlooked members of the low instrument contingent, who anchor the band. Some simple syncopations, such as a spoken line by the other members of the band ("How low can you go?") and a brief, repeated, "cadenza," add to the fun of this clever piece. Duration: 3' 10"

Aunt Rhodie's Diet - Joseph Compello
Aunt Rhodie's Diet is a sequel to the incredibly popular Aunt Rhodie's Appetite. Both arrangements are novel settings in which a beginning band can perform the standard folk songs found in the first few pages of most band methods. Because they are so easy to play, these arrangements by themselves would not make much of a concert, even for a beginning group. However, when used as incidental music to the story, the songs become sufficiently interesting to the audience, without taxing the capabilities of students who have only been playing for about 10 to 12 weeks.

Great Plains Saga - Joseph Compello
This piece for the youngest students depicts wide open spaces, rugged terrain, and covered wagons heading West through the American plains. Students will love to play this contest selection, written in a minor mode. It will make them sound more mature than their experience as the piece can be performed with as little as 10 weeks of study.

Stronghold - Sean O'Loughlin
It is hard to believe that this impressive piece contains only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale and no rhythms more difficult than quarter notes in the winds. Year after year, composer Sean O'Loughlin works his magic to provide young band students with meaningful musical experiences, even after only studying the instrument for 10 weeks or less. Your very young students will sound like pros with this bold new piece and your audience will not be able to believe it.

Railroad Ramble - Peter Kleine Schaars
This composition was commissioned by the Concert Band of the NS (the Dutch railroad company) and is intended as an opening piece, bringing the band and the audience on track for an exciting concert! The ascending chords over theostinato bass of the introduction represent the energetic pulling away of the train. The main theme in 10/8 time makes one drift away in the rhythm of full speed. The clownish middle section reflects the seemingly disorderlyactivity in a station hall during rush hour. This is followed by a reprise of the main theme and the introduction, which brings this fascinating musical rail journey to an end.

1834 - Jan Van der Roost
The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The premire, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The 'Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher' faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!
