The Perilous Seat - David Marlatt

The Perilous Seat was a chair intentionally left vacant at King Arthur's round table. It was reserved for the bravest knight who was willing to take on the quest for the Holy Grail. If someone sat in this seat and was unworthy, they immediately died. Sir Galahad survived this test and King Arthur proclaimed him the greatest knight ever. The shifting meter (6/8 and 3/4) is fairly constant throughout this work. This is a great pulse to introduce students to the concept of shifting pulse---both 6/8 and 3/4 have 6 eighth notes but the emphasis of the accents shifts the feel back and forth creating a fun groove.

    Colossus - Brian Beck

Drama and excitement: right from the start, , by Brian Beck, paints a scene of gladiators preparing and entering the ring for battle. Fanfares alert the masses when a new challenger is arriving, while other, more lyrical themes serve as processionals for warriors to enter. Though for young band, challenges are present with dynamic changes, rhythmic intensity, and some independent playing. Well worth the effort! was commissioned by and dedicated to the Louisiana Music Education Association District IV Honor Band for their performance in 2025. (3:00)Correlates to , Level 3.

    Revelations - Ryan Meeboer

Revelations is a piece with a dark, heroic drive to it, almost as if it reflected a biblical revelation. It opens in a alternating 6/8, 3/4 groove with the lower voices and then builds. Firey rhythms and great contrasting melodies and countermelodies make this powerful piece a great choice for audiences and for the band playing it. (3:30)
