Siciliano and Tarantella (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oare, Michael

This distinctive work by Michael Oare is based on two Italian dance forms dating back to the Baroque period. Siciliano opens with a delicate 6/8 melody in the flutes which is developed and passed around to various sections of the band. In contrast, Tarantella is a brash and uptempo dance featuring a rhythmic pulse accompanying the flowing melodic lines. Quite a nice pairing of tunes with historical importance. Duration: 4.30

A Moorside March (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Brand, Michael

Holst composed A Moorside Suite for Brass Band in 1928. It is in three movements, this March being preceded by a Scherzo and Nocturne. It is an extraordinary mature work for band from a master composer. There is very little fortissimo writing and there are no semiquavers at all. Instead, Holst has written clean melodic lines with each part being woven into a texture based on the modal lines of English folk music; but these represent its stylistic origin rather than using actual folk tunes as in Holst's earlier band writing. The March is stirring and flowing and is an ideal standalone piece to open or close any concert or festival programme. Duration: 4.15

Nimrod (from Enigma Variations) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Elgar, Edward - Hannevik, John Philip

It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Elgar dedicated the work "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close acquaintances. Nimrod (the mighty hunter before the Lord) has become the most played of the variations, and the movement is dedicated to Elgar's close friend Augustus Jaeger (Jager being German for hunter).
