Old World Overture is written as a musical gift from the Old World to the New World and is dedicated to Mauricio Solano and the musicians and organisers of the Corazon Verde Festival (Green Heart) in Paraiso, Costa Rica. I have based this piece on traditional Balkan folk music heard while holidaying on the banks of Lake Ohrid in Macedonia in the Summer of 2013. With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl's (1964), by songwriting team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s---and even more so today, or so says the more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the "Wonkavator" music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heartwarming. As the title might imply, this unique composition contains several references to the number 5. For starters, the meter of 5/4 is an obvious connection. More subtle is the prominent use of the interval of a fifth, and also onlyfive different pitches used throughout the entire work excerpt for two measures near the end.
