The Roaring Forties - Philip Sparke

The Roaring Forties is what seamen call the region between the 40th and 50th degrees of latitude in the southernhemisphere (due to the boisterous and prevailing westerly winds). Nocturne (Symphony 1, New Day Rising, Mvt. II) - Reineke
The second movement depicts the city on the evening of April 17th, 1906. The frenetic pace of the day has given way to a more peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Once the city is lulled to sleep, we hear the distant sound of church bells tolling 5 a.m., the hour the Earthquake struck the city. This movement is segue attacca into the third movement.

Suite from Mass - Leonard Bernstein
Bernstein's Mass was a monumental 90-minute work written for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. in 1971. In this suite commissioned by the Canadian Brass and the Eastman Wind Ensemble, arranger Michael Sweeney focuses on a select number of movements, often using the brass quintet to represent the vocal lines found in the original. The striking and beautiful work includes Alleluia, Sanctus, the well-known A Simple Song, Agnus Dei, Offertory and Almighty Father. Although scored for brass quintet and wind ensemble, ample cues are provided to allow this to be performed by a wind ensemble or symphonic band alone. Dur: c.14:00 (Grade 5)

Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
Baker Street is a stop on the London underground, also known as the Tube. Scottish guitarist Gerry Rafferty started his musical career deep underneath London's streets, busking at various stops. He finally made it big on the international scene with his song, Baker Street. This hit also helped his album, City to City, sell over 4.5 million copies. Hans Thijssen has created an arrangement that captures the sounds of the subway, and includes an optional solo for electric or bass guitar (also playable by the alto saxophone).
