Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the sherman's song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.Duration: 5:30

Score available separately.Following on the success of Arturo Marquez's Danzon No.2 adapted for band, Oliver Nickel's transcription of Conga del Fuego Nuevo (Conga of New Fire) gives an added kick to the concert band repertoire. In contrast to the elegant, sinuous Danzon, Conga is an up-tempo, celebratory piece, bright and catchy, with the percussion section providing the signature kick at the end of the conga pattern. Marquez slows things down in the middle section to spotlight the 1st trumpet in a melody that recalls the mariachi tradition. The alto saxes pick it up and relax into a ritard, only to be interrupted by the return of the opening material. The piece ends in fiery fashion.Duration: 5:00

The whole work is bound together by recurring musical motifs which change their character according to the prevailing mood. 1. Llanddwyn (Reverie): Island of the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Dwynwen, whose marriage to Maelon was never to be, and who dedicated her life to God. 2. Malltraeth (Pastorale): A brisk walk along Cob Malltraeth, a high dyke built to keep out the sea. 3. Penmon (Intermezzo): From a vantage point by the sacred priory of St Seiriol, old sailing ships and modern yachts can be seen scudding by in Regatta week. 4.
