A mother's love is boundless, never-ending, gentle, and caressing. Written upon the passing of the composer's mother, this composition opens with a pure and simple melodic statement that later opens into the warmth of the full ensemble sound, much like the comfort of a mother's embrace. The opening interval of the minor third is often heard by a child calling mom-my, and the piece closes with the bells playing this motive. The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Sackingen. Since Bad Sackingen is known as the 'Trompeterstadt', or trumpeter city, Sparke's creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel's poem, Der Trompeter von Sackingen (The Trumpeter from Sackingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city's famous resident.Duration: 7:30

Dating from the 1600's, the folk song O Waly, Waly (commonly known as The Water is Wide) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also "Carolina" (South Carolina's official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavoured Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble.
