    Fortitude: A Fanfare - Ronald C. Knoener

by Ronald C. Knoener is as much a processional march as it is a fanfare. The theme is of a bold, fanfare nature but it is followed by a secondary theme of a melodic style that will please the ear. The percussion writing is exposed but not difficult. (2:00)

A Regal Celebration - Ryan Meeboer

A Regal Celebration is a great introduction piece to a concert, and is composed to reflect the entrance of a King and Queen into court. Focusing on the first seven notes used in most method books, it uses both block harmony orchestration, as well as call response to help your ensemble evolve from playing unison melodies, into sounding like a mature band.

    A Sailor's Suite - Chris Peracciny

This work takes us to a time long ago, as a fearless crew of sailors begins a voyage at sea in "Setting Sail," when suddenly, a terrible storm washes their ship to the shores of a deserted island in "Shipwrecked!" But fear not, our castaways are saved in "The Rescue." Great fun for players in the first year playing. (3:30)

L'Esprit du Tour: A Fanfare for Lance - Randol Alan Bass

This remarkable piece captures the excitement, physical challenge, intensity and, ultimately, the thrill and sense of accomplishment a rider might experience during such a grueling and demanding physical trial as Le Tour de France. Both tonal and non-tonal compositional materials, some indeterminate and serial techniques, special percussion (a six-tom-tom cluster, heavy chains and four metal plates) along with traditional and non-traditional development procedures are used --impressing upon listeners, through sound, a sense and feel of competitive bicycling, from the point of view of the athletes themselves. In hopes of imbuing the music with the flavor of the various cultures coming together for this contest, the composition contains extant source material as well -- including La Marsellaise, The Star-Spangled Banner and a brief reference to The Eyes of Texas.

Priere a Notre-Dame - Léon Boëllmann / arr. David Marlatt

This beautiful slow movement from a work for solo organ is a great feature for the clarinet section of a band. The melody flows throughout the ensemble but the clarinets receive the most attention. This is an ideal work to show off the lyrical and musical side of a concert band. The haunting melody will captivate audiences and impress adjudicators at festivals and other contests.

Suite for a Band of Players - Donald Coakley

is set in three movements, with the middle movement an arrangement of a well known Quebec folksong. The first movement, "Latino," represents a synthesis of several Latin-American rhythms. "D'ouViens-tu, Bergere" is a folksong of French origin, popular in Quebec. The third movement, "Ritual Walk," should have the feeling of a stately processional. A nice suite for young musicians.
