The well-known spiritual Michael, Row the Boat Ashore is the melodic inspiration for Voyages on a Rowing Song, a brilliantly crafted theme and variations selection. Following a dreamlike introduction and presentation of the theme, three variations follow: a rollicking hoe-down , a contemplative chorale, and a commanding march. Each variation focuses on a different motif from Michael, Row the Boat Ashore, with compelling recapitulation of the original theme occurring during the conclusion of the march variation.

VIEW SCORE PDF This magnificent festive suite was written by Kevin Norbury for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School Wind Symphony and features three well known carols set in a Renaissance style. Three contrasting movements comprise the work: i. Processional (Personent hodie - On this day earth shall ring) This is a short piece imagining a torchlight Yuletide procession (perhaps bearing the traditional roasted wild boar), using a well-known Christmas melody from the large collection of music compiled in the 16th century called Piae Cantiones (1582). The tune is presented twice with accompanying, related melodic material. ii. Pastorale (Quem pastores laudavere - Shepherds sang their praises o'er him) This is a 14th-century melody which was originally collected by Michael Praetorius at the end of the 16th-century. The treatment throughout is very lyrical without overly complex harmonies. The melody is heard three times with brief linking episodes and a short coda. iii. Celebration! (In dulci jubilo - In sweet celebration - Ding-dong merrily on high) This magnificent 13th-century melody was also a part of Michael Praetorius's collection. It is traditionally associated with the words 'Good Christian men, rejoice!' The opening is a straight transcription of the great chorale prelude for organ by J.S. Bach. After the grandeur of the opening, the tune is heard in more of a 'folky' style. A lot of related melodic material is then presented before the tune Ding-dong merrily on high is heard. After another episode of previously used music In dulci jubilo reappears in a joyful conclusion to the piece. The poem "The Resurrection" by Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was set to music by Gustav Mahler in the fifth movement of his Second Symphony, known as the "Resurrection." The central passage from Mahler's musical adaptation was incorporated into "A Tribute to Mahler," a composition created in homage to Mahler, 100 years after his death. Powerful brass tones and delicate woodwind melodies alternate in a Mahleresque manner with horn and trumpet signals from a distance. The choir is delicately complemented by the solo alto saxophone. "A Tribute to Mahler" aims to, like a continuation "after a short repose," offer us a glimpse into the blissful world to which we will all eventually journey.

The title of this piece reflects its upbeat, forward-driven character. It starts out with a soul groove, carrying a prominent theme which invites players and listeners to dance. The slower middle section features a blues with optional solo parts. After the return of the soul beat, the piece concludes with a striking reaffirmation of the initial theme. On a Roll may be performed as an effective opener or as an upbeat rhythm item during a concert or contest. On a Roll was commissioned by the Zrcher Blasmusikverband for the Zrcher Kantonalmusikfest 2024 in Urdorf/Schlieren, Switzerland.

Franco Cesarini was commissioned to write A Glorious Fanfare by the Band Association of the Zug Canton in Switzerland (Zuger Blasmusikverband), to celebrate the centenary of the Association (1922-2022).The composition is the third in a trilogy of scintillating concert opening pieces (which make up opus 38), together with A Triumphant Fanfare and A Joyful Fanfare. A majestic fanfare entrusted to the trumpets introduces the piece. Variations on a Fourth was written for an innovative project initiated by the Siena Wind Orchestra from Tokyo. Four European and four Japanese composers created a new wind orchestra piece for a special concert held on 15 June 2019 in Bunkyo Civic Concert Hall, where all eight works - that were recorded for a CD release the previous day - were performed. Variations on a Fourth comprises four variations, all of which feature the musical interval of a fourth in much of their melodic and harmonic material. The result is a four-movement work of wide-ranging appeal that will be an absolute joy to play!

£164.99A Centennial Journey - Philip Sparke
A Centennial Journey was commissioned by the Norwegian ensemble Stavanger Musikkorps av 1919 to celebrate their 100th anniversary in 2019. The work was premiered under conductor Morten E. Hansen at their Jubilee Concert in the Stavanger Konserthus on 28th September 2019. The piece opens dramatically with a sweeping melody on horns and saxophones under florid woodwind figuration, building to a majestic climax. A trio for the trombones calms the mood until the opening melody returns in a gentler style, eventually building to a busy molto vivo. The woodwind figuration continues over a series of brass trios until the main theme of the work appears on clarinets and euphoniums. This develops to introduce a change of key, featuring a long, hymn-like melody on clarinets and horns. The melody is then taken up by the full band, interspersed with sporadic brass fanfares. The opening of the molto vivo returns and leads to a return of the opening horn melody, building to a thrilling coda based on previous melodic material.

In 2013 the short film 1805 A Town's Tale was released, produced by Refos Film, with music by Otto M. Schwarz. A fateful autumn day in the year 1805: the morning mists hang heavy over the sprawling field near Drnstein. The captain's tent and some smaller tents are seemingly lifeless in their deep slumber. In dawn's half-light, the fires now only steam and barely glow. A figure sneaks past the main tent. This is Phillipe, a soldier of Napoleon's troops, leaving the camp early to warn Mina, his lover, and the other inhabitants of the town of Krems of the planned raid ... The Symphonic Suite is a compilation of various main themes from the soundtrack. In addition to this version, there is also a larger edition in which the orchestra can play 'live' to the film with a click track.

Legend of a Giant is a composition for solo alto saxophone and Wind Band composed by the Belgian composer Kevin Houben. The composer dedicated this challenging saxophone concerto to the Spanish saxophone virtuoso Mariano Garcia.The work had its premire in May 2021 in the Lemmensinstitute with the Wind Band of the LUCA School of Arts in Leuven (Belgium) conducted by Ivan Meylemans.Mariano Garcia is a full time professor saxophone at the LUCA School ofArts, the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon in Zaragoza (Spain) and the Wiener Akademie Musik (Austria).As in any classical concerto the saxophone soloist 'competes' with the orchestra: first alternately, in dialogue witheachother, afterwards fraternally together. Moreover the orchestra is regarded as an equal partner, therefore also for the musicians of the orchestra this cinematic score presents a tough challenge.Legend of a giant immerses thelistener in the world of the saxophone and challenges the soloist in the field of lyricism and timbre, but also on a technical level. In this way various aspects and modern playing styles such as bisbigliandos, double staccato,frullatos, glissandos, harmonics of overtones,... pass in review. In a word: a tough 'challenge' for any saxophone virtuoso! (!) A simplified version of the saxophone solo part also exists.

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult. To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance just weeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies - Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Renie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion Band Artillery Trumpet Corps) - played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.
