In 2009, one year after its formation, the Swiss brass ensemble Azimuts Brass commissioned its conductor, Marc Jeanbourquin, to write them a signature tune. He composed Jazzimut, which features a festive introduction followed by a lyrical theme. After a few bars of rock rhythm, Jazzimut goes disco and finishes with a recapitulation of the introduction as a fanfare. Now available for concert band this is an entertaining piece from start to finish!

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!

El Golpe Fatal - Dirk Brossé
With the sound of trumpets and a long drum roll Dirk Bross takes you to the splendour of the opening ceremony of a bullfight! The rhythm and the use of South American percussion instruments convey a festive atmosphere whilst broad lines and bright colours describe the solemn nature of this event. The imaginary bull is received with great acclaim with the full band playing. Two contrasting themes represent the heroic matador and the condemned bull. The audience cheers as the bull collapses and strong final chords round off the triumph of the matador. The final quiet notes give a feeling of melancholy reflecting the sad end of this story.

Christmas Prelude is a festive composition on the Christmas carol O Come, All Ye Faithful. A quiet, march-like introduction, representing the procession to worship, is followed by three verses of the well-known carol: once from a quartet, then shared between the various instrumental groups. Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames, a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comt, Eastern France.The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia, or Odile), the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind, and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence, she was dubbed Odilia -- child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows, a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax, which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeatedlyrical theme. Finally, the medieval motif returns, this time presented in a festive gospel version.
