Variations on Mein junges Leben hat ein End - Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck - Variations on "Mein junges Leben hat ein End" for Concert Band, arranged by Ramon L. Ricker. Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, informally known during his lifetime as the "Orpheus of Amsterdam," might be considered one of the great masters of keyboard development pre-J.S. Bach. A deep understanding of contrapuntal writing, grown from the composition of more than 250 works for voices, underscore Sweelinck's keyboard innovations: the developed fugue, the organ pedal as a full fugal voice, the level of variation form reached, and the new levels or richly contrapuntal keyboard writing that incorporated various styles and ornamentations of the day.

11th Of September - Ben Haemhouts

No one will ever forget this terrible day, during which two aircraft crashed into the WTC in New York. This choir piece is not a political gesture, but a tribute to all the victims and their surviving relatives.

(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock - Max C. Freedman and Jimmy De Knight / arr. Gerald Sebesky

This classic anthem of rock 'n' roll was sent screaming up the charts not once but twice by Bill Haley and his back-up band The Comets. It was a time when all the boys and girls were devoted 24 hours a day to the celebration of every new rock tune and dance craze. Who would have thought that forty years later, kids (of all ages) still remember, whistle and hum this hip swingin' winner. Program this with your band and you'll be declared 'right on time'! Paper Lanterns - Peter Sciaino

Conjuring breathtaking images of illuminated lanterns floating through the night sky, Peter Sciaino's is a delightful selection that will capture the imagination. Celebrated on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month, the Lantern Festival traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New Year. As the sun goes down, families will often go outside and pay homage to the moon by launching paper sky lanterns (also called Congaing lanterns) which function like tiny hot air balloons. Take your audience to a place of wonder and beauty with this unique selection for young band. (2:15) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Drums of the Saamis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Drums of the Saamis was commissioned by the Medicine Hat Concert Band Society of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The piece chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures. The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are the foundation for the entire piece. Both elements are developed, varied and enhanced throughout as the listener senses the increasing influence of modern day Alberta through the use of modern sounding chords and rhythms. By the end, the marriage of the old and the new is complete. This powerful work closes as it began; a restatement of themes representing the musical and historical foundation of the region.Duration: 5:00

    Clouds - Anthony Ritchie

The starting point for this point was some dramatic cloud formations I experienced while in Morrinsville, New Zealand. It was a brilliantly sunny day, with occasional huge and interestingly shaped clouds floating past. They provided inspiration for the opening texture...
