American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band "The President's Own" and was composed in honour of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favourite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.Duration: 4.15

Trumpeter's Lullaby (Trumpet Trio with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Anderson, Leroy - Iwai, Naohiro

According to music critic Mark Azarra, Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was "one of the four best composers of instrumental music in the 20th century, next to George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives". Many of his nostalgic songs such as Sleigh Ride and Blue Tango are firmly embedded in the American popular music culture. In 1945 at the request of Roger Voisin, the principal trumpeter of the Boston Pops Orchestra, Anderson wrote the Trumpeter's Lullaby. This version for concert band by will be a sure winner.

    Olympia - Brian Balmages

This powerful fanfare captures the spirit of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The opening figure in the percussion is reminiscent of Aaron Copland and introduces the opening theme. As the theme seamlessly develops, the piece picks up tempo as snippets of the fanfare theme are interjected between lyrical statements in the woodwinds. Great (and flexible) percussion writing adds depth to the work. In addition to the regular part, an optional advanced snare drum part is included for accomplished percussionists. Bold sounds yet extremely playable!

Down Wilderness Road - David Marlatt

This lyrical piece was inspired by the opening of by the great American composer Aaron Copland. The title has two possible meanings: it could be a depiction of someone walking on a rough trail through the many woods of Ontario enjoying the sites, sounds, and smells of the peaceful forest; or it could be describing a specific path in the southern United States of America. Wilderness Trail was one of the principal routes used by settlers to Kentucky in the late 1700s and was blazed by none other than Daniel Boone.

Letter from Home (Windependence Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Copland, Aaron - Belski, Brian

Letter from Home was commissioned as a patriotic work in 1944 by Paul Whiteman and his Radio Hall of Fame Orchestra. Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. This sensitive transcription by Brian Belski has produced another wonderful wind band setting from America's most iconic composer.
