The Kings Go Forth (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gregson, Edward
This work was commissioned jointly by the Royal Air Force Music Service and an American Universities Consortium and received its world premiere during the 1996 RAF British Tour. It is scored for large symphonic wind band, with the addition of voices. The work is a sequel to the highly successful The Sword and the Crown which was premiered in 1991 by the mass bands of the RAF (and also was an RAF commission). That work was based on music written for the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of The Plantagenets and Henry IV, parts 1 and 2 (for productions between 1988 and 1991).The Kings go Forth is similarly based on musical material for those productions. It uses different thematic elements and incorporates them into a three-movement suite entitled: The Church; The People; The State. This reflects the fact that in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Shakespeare introduces The People as an important element in the dramatic structure. The Church and The State are, of course, both leitmotivs throughout the entire plays. An Agnus Dei is heard at the outset from a solo voice. The ensuing Dies Irae is a fast and, at times, quite violent dance. The two sections which form the basis of the second movement, The People, concentrate on popular elements and reflect to some extent the tavern scenes in the plays. The two ideas presented are a harvest hymn reflecting the country scenes set in Gloucestershire, and a jazzy, 'up-tempo' dance based on the medieval song, Sumer is icumen in. The third movement, The State, deals with the Kings theme in the title of the piece. The juxtaposition of battle music with funeral music for Henry IV and Henry VI leads to a reworking of the leitmotif from the beginning of the work. The final section is Coronation music for Henry V, eventually leading to a triumphant climax.- Edward GregsonDuration: 17.15Recorded on QPRM 125D Festival of Music 1996, Massed Bands of the Royal Air ForceRecorded on QPRM 134D The Kings Go Forth, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra

The Way to Heaven - Philip Sparke
The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler's ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron's Merlin engines bursting into life before theyline up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

Eagle Squadron March - Kenneth J. Alford
When the Second World War began, the British March King Kenneth J. Alford (pseudonym for Major F. J. Ricketts, R.M.) was increasingly in bad health and had composed relatively little music recently. As Hitler's armies marched victoriously across Europe, Britain was soon alone facing the Nazi peril. Alford's great contribution to the war effort was the composition of two of his great masterpieces, ARMY OF THE NILE, celebrating the first Allied victories over the Germans in North Africa and EAGLE SQUADRON. The latter of these marches celebrates American airmen who travelled to England during the early years of the war (before the entry of the United States into the conflict) to volunteer for service with the Royal Air Force, serving with great distinction during the Battle of Britain. Alford skillfully weaves a number of well-known tunes into the fabric of the music, including the Royal Air Force March and The Star-Spangled Banner, while also including a reference to the Siegfried motive from Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung. Mark Rogers' edition of this classic march includes a handsome full score and concert size set of parts.

Harrison's Dream - Peter Graham
"Harrison's Dream" is a musical depiction of the forty-year effort by John Harrison during the first half of the 18th century to develop a chronometer capable of providing exact time on the high seas. His obsession was a result of the passing of the Longitude Act following the accidental destruction of the Association, the flagship of the British Royal Navy, along with three sister ships in 1707 on rocks off the Scilly Islands. This highly rhythmic and technical composition was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band, Col. Lowell Graham, Commander/Conductor, and has been awarded the 2002 ABA/Ostwald Award for Original Composition. Graham is Associate Conductor of England's Black Dyke Brass Band. Recorded by the United States Air Force Band and the North Texas Wind Ensemble (Klavier).

Lightning Strike (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This march was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Halton Area Voluntary Band to mark their move to Air Command at RAF High Wycombe. The compositional approach to it is reasonably conventional with echoes of the rhythmic cells of the RAF March Past but balanced with some sections imbued with rhythmic energy. There is also a typically broad trio melody which seems to be the quintessential trademark of an RAF march.Duration: 3.30

Flight - Claude T. Smith
Flight is the official march of the Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. It was commissioned by the Air Force Band in 1984 and was premiered by the organization in November of that year. Their recording can be still heard as visitors enter the museum. A highly descriptive work, it incorporates the Pachelbel Canon by request in the opening section before the brass introduces a soaring theme. Sweeping reeds, active percussion and melodic brass are featured in preparation for a most electrifying 6/8 section. Brass fanfares of particular brilliance bring the work to its exciting conclusion.

Dances from the Duck Pond - Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky
The music of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' and 'Nutcracker Suite' are popular pieces of seasonal music, especially at Christmas time, and here Wing Commander Duncan Stubbs, currently the Principal Director of Music for the Royal Air Force, has taken three movements of themes from these works and given them a light-hearted treatment. These attractive settings should appeal to many young/learner bands and prove to be a popular item on their concert programme.
