Favorito - Ernesto Nazareth / arr. Daniel Maudonnet
Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) may have been the most important Brazilian composer to ever live. Credited with blending European and Brazilian influences in his piano compositions, he created many new Brazilian sounds in both the popular and classical music realms. Light and bouncy, Favorito was originally written for piano, but has been excellently scored here by Daniel Maudonnet for concert band.

Fiat Lux (March) - Howard Cable
In 1951, during the war in Korea, Canada's National Defense Department produced a radio series titled "Voice of the Army". The Howard Cable Concert Band was the main stay of this patriotic/public relations program. Half the musical content was military, the balance 50's pop. Thirty nine programes required two marches per show. I composed eight and at the war's end the music went to storage. Some years later I re-constructed several of these forgotten scores; one of which is Fiat Lux - Dedicated to the University of Lethbridge.

The history of the court jester is quite diverse depending on the country. They were either employed to entertain nobility or as an itinerant performer they would entertain common folk at such venues as fairs or markets. Their skills would include such things as songs, music, storytelling, acrobatics, juggling and / or magic. This composition hopes to portray this whimsical entertainer by way of a light and buoyant set of melodic lines and rhythmic energy.

Dancin' on the Bayou - Ralph Ford
It's real fun, but real music as well. Your percussion section will crave the focus on special effects requiring a washtub, washboards, and jugs (a number of the percussion parts are optional but certainly enhance the entertaining effect). Special guests can also join in the fun! This work provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce cut time and perform authentic Cajun or Zydeco styles. (1:16)

Guaracha: Third Movement from Latin American Symphonette (Symphonette No. 4) - Morton Gould, ed./arr. by David Bennett
The "Guaracha" is the Third Movement from Mr. Gould's fourth Symphonette, LATIN AMERICAN SYMPHONETTE, which is in four movements - Rhumba, Tango, Guaracha, and Conga. The "Guaracha," relatively speaking, is the "minuet" movement. The name has two implications - one, that of a "drinking song" to which the word Guaracha is extensively employed in South American music, and second, that of a definite dance pattern. This movement has utilized both ideas, being a development rather than a literal interpretation of the original form. The Symphonette was completed in the winter of 1940 and received its first performance with the NYA Symphony under the direction of Fritz Mahler on February 22, 1941. This version for band is arranged from the original score by David Bennett.

Hallelujah (from ) - George Frederic Handel / arr. David Marlatt
Handel's most frequently performed and most famous oratorio is probably best known for the famous "Hallelujah." The "Hallelujah" is the grand chorus that caused the King to rise from his seat and, as all good subjects, the entire audience rose with him. This tradition holds true even today, reminding us of the great beginnings of this powerful music. This arrangement, for band and optional choir, has been lowered a tone from the original into C concert. (4:30)

The Edge of Adventure - Todd Stalter
Excitement, anticipation, dread, wonder . . . all of these thrilling aspects of the journey of discovery into the unknown are musically depicted in composer Todd Stalter's work, . Players will love the energetic tempo of the beginning, with its unanticipated rhythmic accents, driving percussion, and foreboding chords, and have an opportunity to play expressively in a middle section that builds to a triumphant, musically satisfying expression of amazement and beauty. Listeners and performers alike are drawn into the piece, constantly sitting on adventure's edge, unaware of what to expect as their quest for discovery unfolds. An ideal young band piece to open or close a concert, lends itself to connections to literature and artwork that can inspire your students to find deeper levels of meaning in the music.
