River Run Canyon - Barrie Bartle

"River Run Canyon" was inspired by a white water rafting excursion in the high elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Feel the spray in your face as it opens with the rise, fall, and brief hesitations experienced while riding the river current over and around various rock formations. Eventually the waters deepen and become placid before turning tumultuous once again. There are solo opportunities for clarinet, alto sax, and trumpet in this memorable melody and interesting rhythmic overture.

by Kenley kristofferson, speaks to the reverence of nature and the light that comes from all around us. At the Old Camp Ground - Pierre LaPlante

An old American tradition is to sit around a campfire and sing hymn tunes that are familiar to everyone to while away a spring or summer evening. Three such hymns are included in this arrangement: Softly and Tenderly, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, and The Old Fashioned Meeting. The treatments are highly individualistic and bring back fond memories of a kinder, gentler time. Will Thompson, Anthony Showalter, and Herbert Buffum were the composers (respectively) of the hymns.

    Ragtime Dance - Gerald Sebesky

Use this work in place of a concert march in your next performance. Centering around a ragtime theme, this lighter selection also provides opportunities for the band to stomp their feet. Very easy to put together and reinforce basic rhythmic concepts at this level.

    Riu, Riu, Chiu

This is a lesser-known Spanish Christmas piece dating from around 1550. It is rhythmic and colorful with melody in several voices. The opening is a call-and-response between the trombone and the remainder of the band. This has huge dynamic shifts and Renaissance percussion writing---something a little different on a holiday concert.

    Sonics - Donald Coakley

This spectacular piece, commissioned by the Markham District High School Wind Symphony, Bill Thomas conductor, is a large-scale dramatic work for concert band. Chromatic harmonies and dissonant intervals create tension and excitement. Mr. Coakley's brilliant writing for the many band pieces he has done has reached a pinnacle with this new composition. Sonics is around 12 minutes in length and touches on a variety of compositional techniques. Within the sonata-allegro form themes are introduced and developed throughout the ensemble. Contrapuntal elements as well as many meter changes (7/8, 5/8) keeps the pace of the piece quick and energetic. This is a monumental addition to concert band literature and will quickly find it's place with other Grade 6 level band pieces. The composer describes this work as "acidy" and that term seems to best capture the mood of the piece. Sonics is a very difficult work that would prove to be a challenge for a university/college level ensemble. Professional bands may also consider this piece because of the virtuosity that is required from all players.

    Percussion Mystique - Frank Erickson

Mystique: "a complex of attitudes developing around an idea and a special skill, essential in an activity". The "attitude" in this composition is that of the excitement, as well as the subtleties of percussion playing. The "special skill" is apparent in the featured percussion parts themselves.

Prelude and Celebration - Jonathan Dagenais

An interesting element of this work is that the two main themes were originally composed by the young students on recorders. The piece was built around those themes and the result is a colorful and contrasting work full of rhythmic and melodic interest. On the last section of the Celebration, all the players join together to sing a C pedal tone as a warm accompaniment for three soloists. It is a way to show that we need unity, support and fun in a band to achieve successful performances.
