Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Sebastian - Sparke, Philip
Bach's appointment as the Cantor at Leipzig's Thomaskirche in 1723 required him to produce a new cantata for every Sunday service. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is taken from his Cantata No.147 and is unusually elaborate, treated more like an aria than a chorale. It is perhaps the best-loved cantata movement from Bach's entire output and is a certain crowd pleaser for your concert programme.Duration: 2:45

Sleepers, Wake (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bach, Johann Christian - Sparke, Philip
This enchanting melody is from the fourth movement of Bach's Cantata 140 which was composed in 1731 using the parable of the wise and foolish virgins as the text. The work is beautiful in its simplicity with only three melodic lines, demonstrating Bach's counterpoint at its best. For greatest effect it is suggested that the trumpets and trombones play behind the band or to the right and left of the stage.Duration: 4:30

Fanfare Prelude (O God, Our Help in Ages Past) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Curnow, James
Fanfare Prelude: O God, Our Help in Ages Past is based on the hymn-tune St. Anne, which was used by G.F. Handel in the Chandos anthem, O Praise the Lord, and by J.S. Bach in his triple fugue in E-flat, The St. Anne Fugue. James Curnow's Fanfare Prelude: O God, Our Help in Ages Past captures the thoughts of this magnificent hymn, which speaks of America's reliance upon God. The unusual 4/4 meter setting with artfully crafted re-harmonisations and lush counterpoint gives each listener cause to reflect on the importance and meaning of this melody to patriotic Americans everywhere. Symphonic Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the "Symphonic Variations" are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to a musical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.Duration: 11:15
